The possibility of a further prolongation of the lockdown and gradual opening – and indeed two-speed – of retail trade seems increasingly likely, as the de-escalation of the coronavirus pandemic remains slow.
It is indicative that the government spokesman Stelios Petsas affirmed (Alfa 98.9) that “we will not go to the inauguration as many had imagined” and announced announcements for hairdressers, churches, shops and the quarantine of Greeks abroad, tomorrow Friday.
He admitted that epidemiologists have objections to the opening of the economy and society, since after five weeks of lockdown, the pandemic has not yet been controlled and the NSS has not been substantially alleviated.
“The epidemiological burden is very high, the cases have not yet decreased, the ICUs are not decongested to the extent that we would like. “Scientists are very reluctant to open more,” Petsas said.
According to the information, a gradual opening is being considered, leaving the red areas in closing. First, possibly as of Monday, December 14, businesses with little mobility will open, that is, hairdressers and barbers. The possibility of opening some commercial stores at the same time, such as bookstores and / or toy stores, at the same time, but with rules, is being considered.
In this case, the remaining stores will open on December 21, with a question mark for department stores and shopping centers, which may not be open before the holidays.
The objective of the gradual opening is to “break” the attendance of consumers to the market and not to have in Ermou images similar to those of the exterior of Harrods in London.
The disturbing question, however, is whether the measures that apply to store openings will be properly implemented, to avoid a third wave of pandemics and, therefore, a new stricter quarantine after the holidays.
The scenario of delaying the opening in areas with a high epidemiological burden or in areas with fewer cases to open more activities is also being considered.
Most of the new cases occurred last week in Pella, Pieria, Drama, Kilkis, Xanthi, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Florina. However, the bell that the West Attica government rang yesterday shows that complacency can be dangerous for areas that felt safe.
