Our country may be going through the eighth week of the closure that was implemented on November 7, however, the panorama it presents is not yet what was expected, given the almost 2 months of restrictive measures.
Of course, we must emphasize that the second confinement has nothing to do with the first, in which most of us actually stay in our homes. This time, the streets are unlike anything in a country in lockdown mode, while the operation of the shops, even with the click away method, has greatly increased the traffic on the streets.
In fact, cases may be slowly consolidating into triple-digit numbers of infections per day, but they are constantly “hitting” 1,000. Indicative are what the professor of Environmental Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Demosthenes Sarigiannis, said today, who stressed that the 1,047 cases announced yesterday by EODY were 200 more than what the experts had predicted. As he explained, the scientists had predicted that there would be an increase in click away cases and sociability due to the holidays, but the increase was greater than they had estimated, which shows that something is wrong.
At the same time, each month that passes is worse than the one before, at least in terms of deaths. In the 30 days of December, 2,382 of our fellow human beings died from the deadly virus. This is approximately 50% of the deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in our country.
However, the bad news doesn’t end there. Despite the 8 weeks of lockdown, West Attica, Kozani and as of tomorrow Thursday and Kalymnos should be in a severe state of lockdown. That is, in these areas, the curfew is in effect from early afternoon until early the next morning, while shops and temples are closed.
As if that were not enough, according to the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, nine more areas are in “red” and it is not ruled out that they will follow δρόμο the path of hard confinement. According to Mr. Kikilias, these areas still present a very bad epidemiological picture, according to the data collected and analyzed by the committee, headed by Sotiris Tsiodras.
Areas that are “red” despite blocking
There are indicators that are better, but that by no means means that we should be complacent, he said, referring to areas where the epidemiological situation “is anything but good.”
These are:
- Kilkis
- Evros
- Rodopi
- Tasos
- Florina
- Lesbos
- Blonde
At the same time, he referred to Western Attica, Kozani and Kalymnos, where, however, the strictest restrictive measures are already in force.
Strict blockade on Kalymnos too
The West Attica and Kozani measures, that is, a hard blockade, were imposed today in Kalymnos, as announced by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the announcement, from tomorrow Thursday 31/12 and at 06:00 to Saturday 09/01, it is forbidden to travel outside of Kalymnos prefecture, except for travel for health reasons.
At the same time, from 18:00 to 05:00, any movement of citizens within the island is prohibited.
In addition, religious ceremonies are suspended, as well as the operation of stores (retail, etc.).
“Headache” holidays
At the same time, the holidays are a headache for experts, since the operation “Christmas” can be considered a success, but the bill will arrive in about a week.
This was said, among other things, by the Minister of Health in today’s briefing on the coronavirus.
“If we had the spread of the virus at Christmas and to what extent, we will see it 15 days after Christmas, so next week. The 942 cases we have today are a record of what happened in the country 15 days ago. So , how we will have behaved on New Year’s Eve and what will be the image of the burden of the virus in the country, we will see it 15 days, two weeks after the New Year. And of the Lights too “he stressed.
“I ask you from the bottom of my heart to think, think of our loved ones, think of our healthcare workers who continue uninterrupted all these months and these holy days, fighting in ESY Hospitals. and in other Clinics in the country. And let’s all pay special attention, “he added.
“I know that in the old days what I say is difficult to hear.” That we all want our freedom during these months, to hug our loved ones, to socialize, to move, because unfortunately I see that we are doing much more than expected ” he explained.
The statements of the president of the Hellenic Society of Infections and member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Health, Panagiotis Gargalianou, followed the same wave.
“It is very important. But watch out, what is the tipping point? Until we achieve the goal of 70% herd immunity, the so-called” herd immunity “- we are not a herd, of course, herd immunity is I think what better – we must have our minds. We must be willing to proceed with prudence. And prudence is nothing more than following the measures. The masks, the distances, the little mobility, like the one mentioned by the Minister, which we are living unfortunately, despite of the confinement that we have implemented in the country ”, he stressed from his side.
“The virus does not forgive. It moves fast. And the special characteristic of the virus is that it can spread quickly and can infect and, unfortunately, some of our fellow men even lose their lives. And this cannot be accepted even by the organized state, nor above all, for us health workers, as well as for any citizen ”, he continued.
“Don’t cry in 15 days out of the ICU”
“No one will be on the streets at ten o’clock at night.” At ten o’clock at night the city must be dead, in order to ensure that the next few days will be days in which we cannot take other measures to close people’s lives. ”Michalis Chrysochoidis said among others, speaking to SKAI’s main newsletter.
Asked about traffic after 10:00 p.m. tomorrow, he said that the controls will be universal as on New Year’s Day.
“If in 15 days due to bad behavior we have increased the cases then we will not vaccinate, we will cry outside the ICU,” said the Minister of Civil Protection, adding that every celebration is a knife.
Mr. Chrysochoidis added that Attica (where 341 out of 942 new cases were identified today) is on the “razor’s edge” and is being monitored by the government and infectious disease specialists so that the situation does not slip away.
