Events in Libya are swift as the country’s internationally recognized head of the country’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Saraj announced tonight that he intends to hand over power at the end of October.

According to the country’s state television, Saraj announced his intention to resign in a speech that was broadcast live. The Saraj government is based in Tripoli, while eastern Libya and much of the south are controlled by General Khalifa Haftar.

Tsavousoglou: Close to an agreement on a ceasefire in Libya

A few minutes earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said that Turkish and Russian officials were close to an agreement on the terms of a ceasefire in Libya and the continuation of the political process.

It is recalled that, on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that Saraj is expected to resign as Prime Minister of Libya. The report says he will remain in office until negotiations next month in Geneva to form a new government in the North African country following the resignation of the parallel government in Benghazi. Later, however, Sputnik reported that the GNA denied the reports of Saraj’s resignation, citing misinformation.
