How much have migratory flows changed in recent years the population of the municipality of Atenas? From 2010 to today, what was the period in which legal immigrants registered in the capital of Greece increased? Are opinions true about the alteration of the composition of the population of young immigrants and refugees who have been granted asylum following a request made on humanitarian grounds? Official figures show that approximately one in six residents of Athens is a legal immigrant, with the total population of the capital reaching 664,046 inhabitants and foreigners legally residing in excess of 110,000. According to the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, in the period 2015-2019, the highest increase in legal immigrants was registered in the municipality of Atenas. From 74,815 at the end of 2014, legal immigrants residing in the municipality of Atenas at the end of 2019 increased to 105,935. From the beginning of the year until today, as part of the policy of decongesting the islands, some 35,000 legal immigrants moved from the five Aegean islands (Lesbos, Samos, Chios, Kos, Leros) to mainland Greece. Of the 35,000, official figures show that 4,332 officially reside in the municipality of Athens. Data from the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum show that since 2015 legal immigrants have begun to increase, that is, those who have received asylum and are registered in the population. By 1.34% in 2015 and 2016, they reached the highest increase recorded in the last decade: 1.76% more than in 2015. It was the year with the highest migratory flows, when the islands were flooded by people mainly from Syria but and from other countries like Afghanistan. In general, in the last seven years, the percentage of legal immigrants in the total population of the municipality of Atenas is constantly increasing: 0.84% in 2017, 1.06% in 2018, 1.09% in 2019 and the The trend continues in 2020, with the record so far showing an increase in the refugee and immigrant population by 0.85%.
