Those who found themselves facing the unthinkable event in the city center were shocked.
We daily monitor the information of the Greek Police on the controls and the fines that fall regarding the measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. Among them is the use of a mask that scientists want to use based on current epidemiological data.
The image that a reader transmitted to us on Friday afternoon (9/4) is simply shocking! In Parkou Square, at the Astiko stop, during rush hour, a known drug addict wants to approach him but he has no mask. Then he does the simplest thing, searches the trash, finds a discarded one, puts it on, and enters the city!
We understand that any measure that is taken has no power or value if we ourselves do not have the necessary respect for the public health and safety of our neighbor. It’s like buying a helmet and holding it in my hand or taking a rudimentary one that doesn’t protect me, just to avoid the fine. Only in these cases do I risk my life alone.
In cases like drug addicts or even other respectable citizens who wear a reusable disposable mask, which they throw everywhere and catch with dirty hands, or a multi-purpose cotton mask that is never washed, the risk is great for others. In general, the mask, if not used properly, is even more dangerous for the transmission not only of covid-19 but also of other viruses and germs that we can carry.
Let’s first say that we are facing an insidious enemy that can kill in large percentages people over 65 and above all immunosuppressed, and then assume the responsibility that corresponds to us individually. Hygiene rules have always been and always will be, perhaps a bit stricter, and should be followed. What is new is the way in which our sociability is demonstrated, which must change, at least for a time, until we find the weapon that will face the dangerous enemy.
