With everyone’s eyes on the court for the sentences that will be announced for the members of the criminal organization Golden Dawn, the position of the professor of Constitutional Law, Costas Chrysogonos, regarding the fate of MEP Giannis Lagos caused a sensation.
Mr Chrysogonos, commenting on the progress of the Golden Dawn trial, stressed that Giannis Lagos, even in the event of imprisonment, can remain an MEP and enjoy all the privileges that this post entails, that is, he will be paid normally.
“Irrevocable conviction requires irrevocable conviction”
At the same time, the professor added that “immunity will be lifted but for resignation from office there will have to be an irrevocable conviction.”
Mr. Chrysogonis clarified that even if the convicted person in the Chrysi Avgi case, Giannis Lagos, is arrested and imprisoned, he will theoretically still have his office in the European Parliament, since in practice he will not be able to perform his functions.
Regarding the changes in the Penal Code, which favor the non-deprivation of civil rights for those convicted of Golden Dawn, he stated that even without the changes, the deprivation of civil rights would not be applied immediately.
