An alarm has been triggered in Laconia following the detection of massive cases of coronavirus in agricultural workers. The concern is compounded by the fact that 1,500 foreigners, Africans and Asians currently work in the area.
The country’s health authorities are on high alert to limit the spread of the virus. However, the explosion of new over-transmission hotspots worries experts and the government.
According to a report by ERT, the focus is on the villages of Glykovrisi and Agios Ioannis in the Laconia municipality of Evrotas, where 37 seasonal ground workers were identified as positive for Covid-19.
“We will see the scope of the cases. We will check not only in this area”, stressed Christos Hadjichristodoulou, Professor of Medicine at the University of Thessaly and member of the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Health.
EODY staircase
A team from EODY rushed to the area to track down and limit the close contacts of the cases, while thorough checks are carried out with the rapid test method. A second step from EODY is expected on Monday.
The governor of the Peloponnese, Panagiotis Nikas, said that in the second phase all those who came into contact with the immigrants will be controlled.
The fact that the approximately 1,500 land workers living in the Evrota municipality live in groups of five or even dozens in a few square meters is cause for concern. “Our goal is to control all foreign workers,” said EODY Vice President George Panagiotakopoulos.
Concern
Representatives of local health and local agencies held a meeting, in the presence of EODY Vice President George Panagiotakopoulos, but also the regional governor of the Peloponnese, Panagiotis Nikas.
EODY ladders will remain in the area to continue inspections in the coming days.
