Kind, tender, comfortable, a little naive, without a doubt the grandmother that we would all like to have. The “grandmother Sofia” in the legendary -now Mega series- Penthouse He was one of the favorite characters in the Giannis Dalianidis series. And so Koula Agagiotou was a dear and good person, but also very tortured in her personal life.
THE actor looking magnificent and majestic for many years, he carried his own heavy cross. And he ascended Golgotha with stoicism, discretion and dignity. Leaving no room for others to give you a different look, especially sadness. And perhaps this is due to the fact that months later his death was known in 2006.
“Grandma Sofia”, Katerina Gioulaki’s television mother, was, one might say, forgotten. But her bloody family history took a long time to forget. Wow, the actress was the aunt of the famous Pagrati killer who wanted to look like Don Juan while admiring Jack the Ripper.
The unknown family drama
Koula Agagiotou’s sister from their marriage acquired Dimitris Zagkas, but they divorced when the boy was still a baby. The mother was locked up in a psychiatric hospital and the boy grew up with the actress, his aunt, but also with his grandmother.
The actress loved him very much and raised him as her own son, trying not to spoil him. But the growing boy showed strange signs in his behavior. He dropped out of school in the early years of high school because, as he said, his classmates made fun of him because he did not say “r”.
He was a fanatic admirer of Jack the Ripper and the Roman Emperor Caligula. He spent endless hours in theaters watching crime movies. Whenever he saw a funeral in the street, he followed the procession and expected to see the burial of the dead.
He left his house alone at night and often slept in cemeteries and painted his teeth red to look like another of his idols, Dracula. At the age of 16 he was hospitalized for five months in a psychiatric clinic, where he attempted suicide, while repeatedly attacking his relatives and partners in Lycabettus without, however, presenting any official complaint to the authorities.
The actress’s nephew soon expressed the “desire” to commit crimes against women, with the aim – as he had confessed – to kill as many women as he could. And then commit suicide in a fight.
As he explained, he hated women because they rejected him. In fact, he claimed that at the age of 16 the girl he loved left him, due to his sexual impotence, which he had undergone during an operation he underwent when he was 13 years old, due to suffering from hypospadias.
In addition, he hated his mother for giving birth to him ugly, believing that he was worse than Quasimodo and everyone hated him for it. But he also hated his aunt, because she turned him over to the police but also because she did not give him the money he needed to have plastic surgery to look like Don Juan.
The crime that shocked the nation
It was at midnight on April 23, 1964 that a woman, Maria Bavea, was found dead at the intersection of V. Georgiou and Pratinou streets in Pagrati. Passersby saw the young woman covered in blood in the middle of the street and alerted the police. No significant evidence was found at the crime scene.
The police authorities began the investigations but in the following days – and after exhausting all the possibilities – they found themselves in a dead end.
But everything changed when on May 13, 1964, a knife with traces of human blood arrived at the hands of the police. They soon found themselves in the solution of the mystery and in the murderer of the girl. And it was none other than Dimitris Zagkas, the nephew of actress Koula Agagiotou, who confessed to the crime.
According to her confession, he stabbed her in the back without saying a word to her and then headed home, where she ate and slept.
The role of the actress in his capture
Koula Agagiotou, a few days after the murder, returned home from Thessaloniki, where he appeared in the company of Smaroula Giouli. She asked her nephew if he had a gun and he told her about the knife. He asked for it, took it, and immediately the actress gave it to a friend at the flower shop to throw away.
When the actress was informed by her cousin about her bloodstained shirt that she had washed, she combined all the facts and understood exactly what was happening. She took the knife behind the florist and handed it to a lawyer, expressing suspicions that her nephew was a murderer. The lawyer, in turn, handed him over to the police who arrested the young man.
The story took on enormous proportions – as expected – as the audience’s gaze turned to the trial, where the actress, among other things, explained how much she loved her nephew, whom she raised and tried not to hurt him.
“Why don’t you wink at him, since he was sick and I feared his end?” Why not deprive me of everything for him? “He had testified among other things.
Eventually, the court ruled that “the defendant was hopelessly insane and dangerous.” Although he was found guilty of the murder, it was found that he was completely confused and was ordered to be admitted to a psychiatric clinic. And so was written the epilogue to Agagiotou’s bloodstained family history, which he always carried with him.
The Penthouse and the lonely death
The actress was respected by all her peers and had something to say about her entire character. She may not have been the lead, but her talent was great and it made her stand out. Of the series – stations in his career was the “Border Station” and means “Penthouse”.
In the early years of private television, the Dalianidis series was broadcast on Mega “air” and in it Agagioti plays Sofia Sofianou, mother of the neurotic Katerina (Katerina Gioulaki). Her sweet nature and the fact that she did what her granddaughter (Josh Eweidi) wanted her to do made her beloved by the television audience.
The series has been shown and continues to be shown on repeat and its character is hard to forget. However, she seems to have forgotten herself, as, like other colleagues, she died a lonely death. I was just the death of her co-star on the show, Vicky Vanita.
Koula Agagiotou passed away on October 25, 2006. He died at his home in Koukaki, while his death was known months later.
