Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made an announcement in response to the position of the official opposition leader, Alexis Tsipras, on the case of Dimitris Koufontinas.

The Prime Minister, after referring to the participation of SYRIZA executives in the demonstration in support of Dimitris Koufontinas, points out that “with respect to the rule of law and humanitarian values, the convict receives all possible medical attention.”

“However, you cannot request privileged treatment and violation of the rule of law, not even from the leader of the Official Opposition,” the prime minister stressed.

The announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office states the following:

SYRIZA executives demonstrated today in favor of D. Koufontina, convicted of 11 murders, under the slogan “when the guerrillas enter Athens, the Constitution will be called Koufontina Square.” One of the first laws of the SYRIZA government was to grant special privileges to D. Koufontinas.

And today Mr. Tsipras arrives and instead of asking the convict to end the hunger strike, he asks the government to accept his request to choose the prison in which he will serve his sentence.

In a state governed by the rule of law, the law applies to everyone, even those who despise them, show no remorse, and insult the memory of their victims by ostentatiously touring the places where they were killed.

However, it is not possible for D. Koufontinas to choose his own prison under the threat of suicide. He could go to court for his transfer, but he does not do it and he blackmails.

Respecting the rule of law and humanitarian values, the convicted person receives all possible medical care.

However, you cannot ask for privileged treatment and violation of the legal order, not even from the leader of the Official Opposition ”.
