Stabilization trend in the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater of the urban complex Thessaloniki reflected in the weekly diagram of its dispersion coronavirus in the community, based on the research carried out by its interdisciplinary team AUTH in collaboration with EYATH.
In the attached diagram, presented by APE-MPE, it seems that a slowdown in the improvement of the epidemiological picture of the city is repeated, with small fluctuations between the last 4-5 measurements. A similar pattern of alternation between a stabilizing trend and a more rapid reduction in viral load has been observed in measurements since November 23.
“Every time we see this slowdown in viral load de-escalation and the flattening of the curve, we point to the risk that the positive trend will reverse and we see prices rise.”, says the rector of AUTh and head of the research project, professor, Nikos Papaioannou.
“Today the viral load remains at the orange level, it has stabilized at similar figures to those we had in mid-October. Asked about how periodicity is interpreted in the stabilization of viral load in wastewater and if it can be equated with fluctuations in the virus transmissibility index in the community, its rector AUTH He responded that the correlation refers more to the rate of viral load secretion and in particular “Because we still have a lot of patients in hospitals, who usually secrete a high viral load, compared to asymptomatic or those who have recently been infected, sewage prices should be carefully evaluated “, simpler “The stabilization of the viral load in the effluent does not mean that for every one who does well one is infected, since now there is a significant difference between the cases in terms of the day of complete escape from the disease.”
In the attached diagram, the sampling days recorded in red correspond to more than 500 cases – as announced on the respective days by the ΕΟΔΥ– the days recorded in orange in 100-400 cases and the days recorded in green in less than one hundred cases.
The methodology for evaluating the coronavirus in urban waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the measurements of its genomic concentration virus based on 24 environmental factors, which can alter measurement results.
