The China-type measure and the imposition of a stricter lockdown for two weeks was proposed as a measure by the professor of microbiology, Alkiviadis Vatopoulos, in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus and decongest the national health system.
“A characteristic of the epidemic, since August, is that it has spread throughout Greece. I think we must be much more strict.
The blockade must be strengthened, as in China. In Wuhan, a man went out once a week to go grocery shopping. This must also be done in Greece. Let businesses close and operate every day as if it were Sunday. “A Wuhan-style blockade for two weeks could decongest the situation and stop the transmission of the virus,” emphasized Mr. Vatopoulos speaking with SKAI.
But could Greece become Wuhan, even for two weeks?
What did the blockade in China predict?
At first glance, we must not forget that what China did in February was not only not easy but also unprecedented.
We are talking about the biggest blockade in the history of humanity (2.5 months, 76 days), since thirteen cities and more than 60 million people closed their homes.
Homes in China had been turned into “prisons” and life had practically stopped.
The streets were filled with police and the army who controlled the movements and the implementation of the measures. Barricades were even set up to prevent entry and exit into the city.
Airports, railways and roads were closed.
It seems distant but in any case it is difficult to forget the videos with the illuminated skyscrapers from where the locked Chinese sang and told each other courage.
In Wuhan, residents shout “武汉 加油 / Wuhan Jiayou” from their apartments. It translates as “Wuhan Be strong / You can do this”; this kind of solidarity is very comforting. pic.twitter.com/xfQKyflCPy

A few months later, statistics show that what China did was successful.
Although some question the validity of the numbers coming from China, the lockdown was a success, Isaac Bogoch, associate professor of Infectious Diseases at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, told wired.co.uk, adding that the theory seems have worked in practice.
What China has done, no one can do
However, the professor had stressed that such a thing could not be applied anywhere.
“China has been able to apply these measures better than anyone on the planet. There is no other place that can do what China did with this size and maintain it.” Proof of this is the cancellation of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which no other country could have. self-made, say, New Year’s Eve, “Bogoch said in March, adding that similar measures were implemented in the early 1900s, in 1918 for the Spanish flu.
However, apart from expert estimates, yesterday’s figures in China “speak for themselves.”
China yesterday (11/19) registered only 12 cases and no deaths. In other words, this is an eradication of the pandemic if you consider that China has a population of 1.43 billion people.
Would it have an effect on Greece too?
Of course, the Greek professor of microbiology did not propose to apply the Chinese-type measures in Greece for so long, but for two weeks.
But would that have such an effect?
According to experts, this would be very difficult to implement in Greece, since in addition to the military-type blockade, China also carried out massive tests in entire cities of millions of inhabitants.
In our country, therefore, there is no infrastructure to carry out the second part.
So even if such a blockade were imposed, it would be very difficult to carry out massive checks across the country.
Specifically, for such a thing to happen, the help of the army would be needed, so that all the inhabitants of the country are examined in their homes or in their neighborhoods.
The general population control policy for the virus would also be very costly, although no one can say for sure that there will be no more cases, especially in northern Greece, where movements from prefecture to prefecture are frequent.
So even though the general population control policy is now a “toy” for China, which in fact managed to control 9 million inhabitants of a city in 5 days, for Greece it would be a very difficult task.
