Mount Athos remains on alert after the detection of 13 cases of coronavirus in two monasteries (Agios Pavlos and Chilandari) and in the hermitage of Provata.

In the last hours, some 200 tests have been carried out that have been negative. Last night, the EODY team left the Athos peninsula, after completing tests in hermitages, cells and the Athoniada school.

The possibility of a confinement had fallen on the table as a measure to limit the spread of the virus to a total of 1,000 members of the Holy Community, however, it was rejected by the Holy Community of Mount Athos, citing the Constitution, according to which, Mount Athos governed by a special regime defined by the Local Government of the State of Athonite.

Most monks invoke religious and self-governing reasons for not imposing measures, such as even wearing a mask, according to protothema.gr. In fact, the monks reported that based on the restrictive measures “every day between 400 and 500 people will be able to enter, so once again on the Corona front we are in a critical phase.”

According to the same source, some students of the Athoniada School who did not wear a mask referred to the EODY officials, their intellectuals who did not recommend it.

The Mount Athos administration circles are concerned, saying: “The Hersonissos is not an autonomous state like the Vatican” and “Public order under the Constitution is the responsibility of the administration, then should it be implemented for health reasons?

Ten people per monastery

According to a circular issued by the Holy Community, and sent to all monasteries on Mount Athos, the issuance of only special dormitories with a maximum of 10 people per monastery is allowed, while the movement of visitors from one monastery to another is prohibited.

It is recalled that eight cases of coronavirus were detected in the Agios Pavlos monastery, one in the Chilandari monastery, one in the Provata hermitage, while three new cases were published.

A monk from the Agios Pavlos monastery was transferred and is being treated in a hospital in Thessaloniki. while the monastery has been quarantined.
