Coronavirus cases in Greece are once again on alert, causing headaches for both scientists and the government of our country. The 269 cases may have been significantly reduced from the 300 of the previous days, but on the one hand the fact that it is Monday and on the other hand the 197 of Attica bring the new measures closer.
Of course, it’s not just the cases that are scary. The four times higher mortality rate in the UK, five times that of France and almost double that of Italy is shocking to the scientific community.
In recent days, the daily number of deaths has doubled, while a major problem in reducing the pandemic is the number of “orphaned” cases, which reach 50% of those recorded every day by government agencies.
Even 69% of ICU patients sadly end up confirming doctors’ reports of the large percentage of intubated patient deaths.
This is the reason why another series of actions is being prepared in Attica that aim to “extinguish” coronavirus outbreaks, at a time when deep down there is always a new confinement.
5.2 deaths per day
These are some of the dramatic facts about the evolution of the pandemic in the country, where all the data and statistics are presented in the critical last ten days from September 18 to 27. During this period, 2,706 cases and 52 deaths were registered, that is, 19 deaths per 1000 cases and an average of 5.2 deaths per day.
It is worth noting that only the previous ten days. From September 9 to 18, approximately the same number of cases (2,658) was recorded but with 34 deaths corresponding to an average of 3.4 deaths per day and 12 deaths per 1000 diagnoses. In the summer, the average number of deaths from covid-19 was just two per day.
What does the comparison with Italy, France and Great Britain show?
In the last ten days, in Italy 14,939 cases have been diagnosed with 167 deaths (11 deaths per 1000 cases), in France 109,873 patients and 479 deaths (four deaths per 1000 registered bodies).
The corresponding rates in Spain are 24 cases per 1000 inhabitants and in Great Britain with five people losing their lives per 1000 patients.
But, even more impressive, is that Greece has risen, according to data from the last ten days, to the list of deaths per 1,000,000 inhabitants compared to other European countries.
Greece now has five deaths per 1,000,000 inhabitants, when in Great Britain, which was hit hard by the pandemic in May, now has only 3.7 deaths in the same population, while in Italy, where it developed in spring. the nightmare with around 900 deaths per day – 2.7 deaths are now detected per 1,000,000 inhabitants in a 15-day period.
In Spain, in the same last period, 15 deaths were registered in the same number of inhabitants.
Likewise, in the last ten days, if we take into account the initial number of patients intubated on September 18 (71), the 52 deaths and the 23 exits from the ICU, it is found that 72 people were admitted to specific units.
The death toll of people over 64 years old was 40 in the last ten days, while the number of patients in the last ten days of this age was 259.
At the same time, the number of cases in Attica is increasing significantly, reaching almost 60% compared to the territory when this percentage was in the order of 20-30% in summer.

Of the 422 rapid tests in Koumoundourou Square, 10 tested positive
Ladders of EODY carried out today, Monday, September 28, a quick test in Koumoundourou square in central Athens.
The total number of tests carried out is 422, of which 10 were positive (3 refer to Greeks and 7 to foreigners).
Less than 40 years 1 in 2 patients
The data shows that only 12.6% of cases occur in people over 65, at a time when the coronavirus gallops at a younger age. Based on the statistics, the government now rules out the possibility of measures that affect the elderly, while on the table are measures to avoid synchronicity.
The new measures, however, did not give the desired results, as young people huddle in the squares. 50% of infections are found in young people up to 39 years old and everyone is afraid of transmitting the virus to the elderly, that is, to their parents and grandparents.
The 7 new “interventions” to reduce the pandemic
Data on the spread of the coronavirus and the evolution of the number of registered cases were examined at a working meeting held at the Ministry of Health. The ministers together with the mayor of Athens, taking into account the epidemiological data, and in order to protect the health of the 650,000 inhabitants and visitors of Athens, announced a series of actions.
In particular, the Municipality of Atenas and the Ministry of Health are advancing with a new package of actions that are added to the measures that have already been taken, in constant coordination with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection and EODY, as well as with all the agencies involved. .
What was decided
The main objective of the City Council of Athens is to prevent the transmission of the virus, starting with the city’s neighborhoods. Decentralizing tests and prevention actions in all corners of Athens, strengthening their structures and taking special care of vulnerable and vulnerable groups of the population.
At the meeting held at the Ministry of Health, it was decided to strengthen the coordination of all the services involved and joint planning to address the situation, with the following actions:
- The Municipality of Atenas has 8 City Friendship Clubs, which are formed and become small diagnostic testing centers for COVID-19.
- The tests will be focused and in accordance with the applicable protocols, complying with all safety and hygiene measures, with a view to protecting public health, and especially vulnerable and vulnerable groups of the population.
- Availability of faster tests for increased controls in the two structures of the Municipality of Atenas (Multipurpose Center for the Homeless and Center for the Reception of Drug Addicts).
- Rapid tests are intensifying with EODY in congested areas of Athens, where the majority of coronavirus cases are recorded.
- The teams of the City Council of Athens that work daily in the streets of Athens for the support and care of the homeless (streetwork), are framed and supported by nurses, to take more samples but also to provide more specialized health and wellness services to the people in need.
- Two new temporary isolation structures are being established to accommodate addicts to reduce their health risks from a possible infection, as well as citizens of vulnerable and vulnerable groups who have been found positive for the virus, so they must implement measures of social distancing. to limit the possible spread of the virus. All health protection measures will be applied in these structures, under decent living conditions.
- The “Joint Center for Daily Management”, which operates in coordination with the Greek and Municipal Police, expands its activities in communication and joint planning of all agencies and services that have been responsible for the prevention and protection of the health of citizens .
The situation in Greece
It increased compared to yesterday, but below 300 cases occurred in our country in the last 24 hours. In addition, 73 of our fellow citizens are being treated by intubation. Their average age is 69 years. 17 (23.3%) are women and the rest are men. 87.7% of intubated patients have an underlying disease or are 70 years or older. 201 patients have been discharged from the ICU.
Finally, we have 4 more deaths registered and 383 deaths in total in the country. 142 (37.1%) women and the rest men. The mean age of our dying fellow citizens was 78 years and 96.6% had some underlying disease and / or were 70 years or older.
Age distribution
The average age of the cases is 39 years (range 0 to 102 years), while the average age of death is 78 years (range 25 to 102 years). The age distribution of (a) total cases, (b) cases that resulted in death, and (c) patients treated by intubation, is as follows:
