The daily cases of the coronavirus in our country reached a figure of four digits (1,259) and for some it could have been a surprise and a chill at the same time, but for most it was the expected result of the increase in recent days, as well as the denial of some of the society but and the government to face the reality of the pandemic.
“We expected the second wave of the pandemic in our country to be worse,” said Sotiris Tsiodras, who was specially recruited at today’s coronavirus briefing given the critical situation. The head of the Commission of the Ministry of Health for the coronavirus affirmed that we try to avoid confinement in any way, imposing measures that are not pleasant, but are absolutely necessary to stop the virus.
And he may have recognized that “the issue of responsibility is tiresome, it is time for hearts to speak”, but his invocation of the “conscience” of the Greeks and especially of the young is mainly indicative of the lack of effective tools against pandemic. To this, many attribute Mr. Tsiodras’s admission that nothing more can be done about public transport “suffering” and its dramatic and at the same time strict appeal to the attention of young people.

One of the problems with 1259 cases is that they are just a number. This number is scary, but it does not give a complete idea of the seriousness of the situation. The real magnitude of the problem becomes more apparent with Gika Majorkinis’ warning of an exponential increase in cases in the near future. In addition to the fact that more than 100 intubates were fired, at a time when infectious disease specialists warned a few weeks ago that if this happened, a blanket shutdown would be necessary.
Another concrete example of what the 1,259 cases mean is the fact that hospital beds are filled one after another with patients infected by coronavirus. In Attica mainly, but also in other places, general clinics are transformed into coronavirus ICUs, with the consequence that in a short time other patients will not be able to be seen. At AHEPA, coronavirus hospitalizations have increased 350% in the last 10 days, while there is a 40% reduction in scheduled surgeries.
The idea of the collapse of the public health system is obviously much scarier than any statistic. At present, the state is investing primarily in preventive measures (such as free trials) to deal with the pandemic. However, there are other measures in the government’s quiver.
The new measures that are on the table
As MEGA revealed yesterday, in 15 days the government will decide whether to proceed with a general blockade throughout the country.
The critical date is November 9, while critical decisions will be made this Friday.
According to information, the next measures that the government is considering are:
– Prohibition of traffic outside the prefecture. It is not yet clear how it will be implemented, although it already applies to prefectures that are at alarm level 4. It is not allowed to move from one prefecture to another in these areas. Specifically, it is not allowed to leave Kozani and Kastoria prefectures, which are in red.
Padlock in focus. On the table is the Paris-type measure, that is, to close the restaurants after 9 pm.
-In the immediate future, the cessation (prohibition) of traffic will be considered to have been carried out before 00:30. This is a measure that has already been proposed to the Committee on Infectious Diseases.
-Increased teleworking
-Travel restriction for citizens over 65 years old. A measure that had been heard, that had been refuted, but that once again takes center stage.
What did Sotiris Tsiodras say about the possible closure?
The professor was clear about the blockade, underlining that at the moment it is not something that is much discussed in Europe but also in Greece, since “it will be our last option.”
However, he left open the possibility that we will be drawn into this pan-European election if things get worse. The committee tries to avoid the ban in the country, but “a crucial role will be played by the personal choice of each one of us, that is, if it will respect its neighbor and implement the measures,” he said.
“It is the moment of conscience and the moment that hearts speak. It is a choice of freedom to observe the measures,” he stressed.
Sotiris Tsiodras also spoke about the need to keep distances, referring to shops, meaningfully pointing out that he would prefer the volume of the music to be lower, so that spectators do not have to shout and approach.
Asked about possible new measures, he stressed that “we are discussing what is needed.”
The NSS is on the brink of collapse
The explosion in income leads to an increase in the number of patients entering the intensive care unit, while the exponential increase in cases creates dominoes of problems in the health system.
In large hospitals, beds fill up quickly. A typical example is Thriasio, where clinics are full and cases are transferred to other hospitals.
In Evangelismos there are only 15 empty beds, as 75 patients with symptoms of the disease are treated, while the Sotiria clinics with 90 patients are full. In Gennimatas, however, 23 of the 31 beds in the coronavirus clinic are occupied.
Hospital administrations are forced to close clinics and turn them into covid, as many of those who are positive now need treatment. The biggest problem is faced by hospitals in the region.
In Kastoria 12 patients are treated with coronavirus. The pathology was closed to give beds exclusively to patients with symptoms of the virus. The Ptolemaida and Kozani hospitals are on its borders, while in Ioannina’s Hatzikosta an additional 24 beds were delivered for coronavirus cases, as Ioannina is affected by the virus outbreak.
Shortly before the “red” is Thessaloniki. As an indication, data from AHEPA, where coronavirus hospitalizations have increased by 350% in the last 10 days, while there is a 40% decrease in planned surgeries.
At the same time, in the ICU of “Papanikolaou” there is an increase of 100% of the patients treated there.
Alarm for Northern Greece
As in the first wave, northern Greece has taken back the reins of the pandemic, with Attica picking up the majority of cases on a daily basis, but has stabilized at around 200-220 cases per day. In contrast, Thessaloniki had only 4 fewer cases today than Athens (291 vs 295).
After Kozani and Kastoria, Ioannina and Serres will also upgrade to the “red” level of 4 increased alarm from Thursday.
At the same time, a double-digit number of cases was recorded in various regions, and the situation was constantly assessed.
In particular, 20 new cases were registered in Evros, in Halkidiki 22, in Rodopi 73, in Pella 20, in Serres 55, in Drama 18, in Kavala 12, in Kilkis 11, in Kozani 12, in Xanthi 15 and in Serres 55 .
