The outbreak of the new coronavirus was located in a Chilean military base in Antarctica, the only continent that remained unharmed from the pandemic until yesterday, the Latin American country announced on Monday.
Military and civil
In total, “36 men” were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, 26 of whom were military and 10 “civilians”, employees of a company hired to “carry out scheduled maintenance work” at the Bernardo O. Higgins Riquelme base, clarified in a statement from the staff.
The infections are believed to be related to a recent visit to the base of the Chilean Navy’s multi-role ship Sargento Aldea for refueling between November 27 and December 10.
After completing his mission and returning to his port of Talcuano (south) on December 16, three cases of the new coronavirus were identified among the 208 members of his crew.
Of the minimum areas
Until yesterday, Antarctica was among the few areas on the planet where cases of SARS-CoV-2 had not been registered, after the imposition of restrictive measures and the cancellation of tourist visits.
All unnecessary personnel were removed when the pandemic broke out and it was decided to prohibit all contact between the personnel of the approximately 40 permanent military and scientific bases.
