Two 24 hours after the first bell in schools and the first “locks” for cases of coronavirus is a fact, a fact that worries the Ministry of Education and scientists.
Although everyone expected coronavirus cases to occur among teachers and students, it seems that they arrived much faster than expected.
The Ministry of Education has dealt with both cases where a department will be closed and cases where an entire school unit will be closed to cover lessons.
As it became known today, after a relevant board posted on the website of the Ministry of Education, five school units suspended their operation while in another school, a department was temporarily closed due to an incident.
So far no details have been given on the exact number of cases in these schools, however it was considered necessary to suspend them according to EODY protocols.
According to official figures, five schools will remain closed:
- Kaisariani’s 2nd GEL until 9/27,
- Vouta Second Primary School, Heraklion, Crete until 9/27,
- the special education primary school in Kallithea, Lemnos, until 9/18,
- the special education kindergarten in Kallithea, Lemnos, until 9/18 and

What is provided for suspension of school departments and units
It is recalled that to deal with cases of coronavirus in school units, a working group has been created by the Ministries of Health and Education, in collaboration with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, as well as a complete protocol to follow in case suspected or confirmed coronavirus outbreak.
Through this group the closure of the school will be facilitated if there is a case, since a joint ministerial decision will no longer be necessary.
It is observed that the Ministry of Health sent a circular in order to carry out health checks in all schools (day, night, public, private) and nurseries and kindergartens.
The role of the Covid-19 manager
Additionally, each school will have a COVID-19 manager and his or her alternate.
The person in charge must inform and educate staff and students for the timely treatment of cases. It will also be in charge of registering cases related to the coronavirus as well as the isolation of cases.
Then, the person in charge of coronavirus of each school will contact the parents, the school management, the regional education and health directorates, as well as the EODY in case of a suspected case.
“The person in charge informs and trains staff for timely identification and case management. Communicates with parents, education departments and EODY,” he said.
Finally, he will be responsible for the configuration of the space for the isolation of suspicious incidents, as well as the registry of the close contacts of the cases.
What happens if a student has symptoms?
Any student, teacher or member of school units, if they have symptoms at home, stay there and inform the school. These symptoms are fever, cough, shortness of breath, anemia / taste, gastrointestinal symptoms, and the absence of an alternative diagnosis for these symptoms.
If a student develops suspicious symptoms at home, follow these steps:
- Direct communication with the family
- Seclusion of a child in a specially designed, well-ventilated area away from other children wearing a mask
- Both the child and the supervising staff take care of meticulous hand hygiene and take improved measures (waterproof apron, mask, pre-mask, gloves)
- Thorough cleaning of the area when the child leaves
- Then the child should see a doctor
- If infection is suspected, test as a priority
Pending the result, the child will remain isolated at home and the school will continue to operate.
What if a teacher or other school staff member has symptoms?
- Leave school immediately
- In case someone comes to pick you up, please stay in an isolated area.
- Visit a doctor and evaluate symptoms
- If deemed necessary, priority tests are performed
And in this case, the school continues to function normally pending results.
When can a person with a coronavirus go back to school?
Whether it’s a student or a teacher, anyone who develops Covid-19 can return to school 10 days after the first day of symptoms.
It will be necessary to have passed 24 hours with complete remission of the symptoms, not have fever and not need antipyretics.
Per the instructions, a second molecular test is not necessary.
What happens in both and all three cases?
In the second case, the school’s COVID manager must inform and sensitize the entire school community to better comply with the measures. Based on the risk assessment, it will be decided how many will be tested.
In the third case, finally, if we have three confirmed cases in the same unit in 14 days, that have no family relationship, no special contact outside of school, then we have a series of cases. In this case, the scope of the laboratory test and the possible closure of the educational unit will be decided.
Alarm in Kaisariani
The coronavirus cases were recorded at 2nd General High School in Kaisariani, raising an alarm bell for teachers and students.
The school principal and a teacher test positive for the virus. It seems that since the holy communion on Monday it was known that there was a case, however with the confirmation of the second the decision was made.
