Concerns about the spread of the coronavirus in our country have reached “red”, after the continuous detection of cases in closed structures.
In addition, every day we count a number of new three-digit cases, while the number of people hospitalized in beds in Intensive Care Units (ICU) increases.
The deadly virus is now ubiquitous in the country, and Attica remains the largest source of infection.
Asymptomatic people remain the big problem because they unknowingly transmit the virus and Greece has been experiencing an upward trend since early August with experts warning that even more difficult days await us.
The elderly care centers, which are potentially health pumps, have been closely monitored and thousands of tests are being carried out at the reception centers.
In a Maroussi nursing home, which houses 100 elderly people and employs 50 people, 19 cases were detected yesterday, while in the Moria camp, where a migrant positive for the virus was found, EODY is expected to carry out 2,000 tests. A case was also found in a structure for the homeless in Athens, which was quarantined.
On Thursday night, the refugee accommodation structure in Oinofyta was quarantined.
Scientists are also closely monitoring the growth rate of new referral hospital admissions, with an emphasis on the number of people needing treatment in the ICU. Of the 203 ICU beds that are now exclusively available for COVID-19, 47 are occupied and we are only in the first week of fall.
Dramatic warning
According to Giannis Tountas, Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine at EKPA, “We are in the ascending phase of the second wave that began in early August. There is no stabilization. We must be careful because this ascending phase will continue in the next few days, so that even more difficult times and hours await us. I would not say that the pandemic will explode, but we are in a growing trend. “If it will explode depends on how well the measures that have been taken are fulfilled,” stressed Mr. Tountas, speaking with ANT1.
Approximately how many can be active cases that can transmit the virus said in a characteristic way. “I estimate that the cases in Greece since the beginning of the pandemic are about 100,000. Of these active cases in this period are 10,000 to 15,000. This means that the virus is everywhere in the country, it is around us. All of them transmit the virus and, being asymptomatic, they are unaware of the infection and behave as if they were healthy. “So they can spread the coronavirus widely.”
When asked if the fact that the reagents were finished was worrisome, he explained: “We should not worry. It was normal to run out of stock of reagents that we had recently and after August 10 to 15 with the return of the holidays there were many Testing. At the beginning of the pandemic we were doing 800 tests a day and today we have reached more than 15,000 per 24 hours. “This large amount has caused a temporary shortage that I believe will be solved soon, so there is no reason for concern.”
Alarm in Inofyta
After the detection of two positive cases of coronavirus, the refugee-immigrant reception structure in Oinofyta, Attica, was quarantined, and the list of reception structures where strict restrictive measures are applied dangerously increases, intensifying fears of creating sanitary pumps.
The announcement issued by the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, highlights that “positive for COVID-19 / corovirus was found 45-year-old asylum seeker, who resided in the Inofyta accommodation structure. The 45-year-old man, originally from Iraq, is the father of a single-parent family, whose daughter has not become ill.
The case was taken to the hospital with mild symptoms, where he is being treated.
“In addition, their contacts were traced and a sample of 18 people was taken, of which a 27-year-old Syrian woman tested positive for the virus.”
The 27-year-old asylum seeker will remain under house arrest with her family.
The process of re-tracking your contacts is in progress.
With a joint decision of the Ministers of Citizen Protection, Health and Immigration and Asylum, the hospitality structure of Inofyta, in collaboration with EODY, is immediately placed in complete sanitary exclusion (quarantine) until 09/16/2020 ”.
Outbreaks in Maroussi and Moria are scary
At a nursing home in Maroussi, an elderly man was admitted to Laiko with symptoms of a stroke. There he was tested for coronavirus and as soon as the result was positive, he raised the alarm to EODY, since the asylum has capacity for 100 people and another 50 work.
All patients are asymptomatic and come from the same ward. Eight have been transferred to Pammakaristos and 9 to Evangelismos.
In Moria camp there are EODY ladders that will run 2000 tests in an attempt to map the situation there, following the case of an immigrant. The Somali had also traveled to Athens.
Meanwhile, a homeless structure in central Athens was quarantined as a man tested positive for the virus. Contact follow-up is in progress.
The situation in Greece
On Thursday, EODY announced 241 new cases. In fact, almost half of them are in Attica. Of these, 31 were identified during the controls carried out at the gates of the country.
