This Sunday was historic, not only for Greece, but for all of Europe when vaccination against the coronavirus began.
“A small prick for man, a great leap for humanity,” wrote the Greek Delegation to the European Commission in a Twitter message, paraphrasing the historic phrase of Neil Armstrong when he stepped on the Moon.

The beginning of vaccinations marks the hope of the world for the beginning of the end of the pandemic, since humanity has added to its quiver perhaps the most powerful weapon (science has given it) against the “invisible enemy”.
The road is still long …
The truth is, of course, that we have a long way to go before the goal of immunity is achieved. Another problem is that this first generation of vaccines does not protect against infection by the virus, it only ensures that we do not get seriously ill with it. So some major changes in our lives, like wearing a mask, may be here to stay.
Regarding vaccination, the goal of the Greek government is to vaccinate between 60% and 70% of the population of our country at the end of June. As Sypsas warned, if 70% of the population is not vaccinated, the pandemic will continue to exist.
At the same time, the health system in the country remains in “red numbers”, with the hospitals full for months, and the treating doctors and nurses have already exceeded their limits. In addition to the blockade that has been in place for 7 weeks across the country, stricter measures are also in place in West Attica, Kozani and Thespies, Boeotia.
This, of course, will depend on the success of the vaccination plan and the adequate supply of valuable doses by the pharmaceutical companies. It is also remembered that ordinary people, that is, adults over 18 years without underlying diseases, will begin to be vaccinated from June, with the cold winter months ahead.
Today’s vaccination of the country’s top politicians, as well as the first two citizens (the nurse and the old man), was definitely a highly symbolic move. But if we have something to hide today, it is that the vaccinations of health workers, these “front-line fighters” who have been fighting the coronavirus for months – have started – often without sufficient strength, without being paid for their hours. extras, with selflessness and conscience.
And whether someone agrees with him politically or not, Varoufakis said something appropriate today, after he was vaccinated: “It is unfair that not all citizens can be vaccinated.” Today has allowed a moment of optimism, which of course is always useful and welcome in these difficult times to live. Most of the world hopes to lead the way in 2020, but from mid-2021 onwards we will be able to speak of a “white day.”
The vaccine is not the only dead end: we also look forward to drug development, and most importantly, we wear our mask, keep our distance, and do everything we can to get out of lockdown first.
Historic day: The first vaccines
Vaccines in Greece began today with political and state leaders, to convince even the most reluctant, at a time when all sorts of conspiracy theories have tremendous power and influence, that vaccines save lives.
The first two Greeks to be vaccinated were “Evangelismos” nurse Efstathia Kampisiouli and Michalis Giovanidis, 88, housed in an Elderly Care Unit.
This was followed by the country’s first citizen, President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Of course, Sotiris Tsiodras attracted attention for its simplicity and scientific prestige. “It’s not over yet,” he warned.
“Hope overcomes fear” was the optimistic message sent by the President of Parliament, Costas Tassoulas.
This was followed by vaccinations by Yanis Varoufakis, secretary of MERA25 and Maria Theodoridou, president of the National Vaccination Committee.
The vaccinations were completed with a representative from the army and one from the clergy: the Chief of Staff Konstantinos Floros and the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos.
A series of politicians from both the government and the opposition will follow in the coming days.
The three phases of vaccination
According to the “Libertad” plan, vaccination will be carried out in three phases:
In the first phase, the following will be vaccinated:
- Health and social services staff
- Nursing home residents and staff
- Residents, patients and staff of care structures for the chronically ill and rehabilitation centers
- Priority staff for critical government functions
In the second phase, people aged 70 and over (regardless of their medical history) will be vaccinated.
Higher prioritization:
- People aged 85 and over
- People aged 80 and over
- People aged 75 and over
- People aged 70 and over
But also:
- Patients with diseases at very high risk of COVID-19 disease regardless of age
- Priority personnel for critical functions of the State
- People ages 60 to 69 (regardless of medical history)
- Patients ages 18 to 59 with high-risk diseases of COVID-19
While in the third phase, people 18 years of age or older without underlying diseases will be vaccinated.
13034: The number that enters our lives
Citizens can check if they belong to any of the priority groups in the following ways:
- By entering the AMKA and your name on the website http://emvolio.gov.gr and the web / mobile application.
- Sending a text message (SMS) to the 5-digit code for exclusive use (13034).
Appointment scheduling
As of January 2021, the Citizen can schedule their vaccination appointment, in the following ways:
After connecting with the TAXIS data on the website http://emvolio.gov.gr.
Confirming the proposed appointment by text message (SMS) in the 5-digit code for exclusive use (13034).
For citizens who are not familiar with technological means, visiting the KEP or pharmacies. The citizen will receive the unique code-number of the appointment, as well as the QR Code, depending on how the appointment is scheduled. It is observed that through the application of appointments the repeated vaccination is planned at the same time.
Appointment reminder
Three days before the date of the appointment, the citizen will receive an email and SMS reminder of the date and time of the appointment along with a link to the website that has the appropriate general preparation instructions (for example, have no fever , have the code, etc.), but also special instructions depending on the vaccine to be used.
Vaccination
The citizen gives the code-number of the appointment or the QR code and the identification element (identity card, passport, etc.) to the personnel of the Vaccination Centers. The staff, using the dating app on tablets, will scan the QR code or search for the appointment based on the code number and confirm it.
Next, the required questionnaire prior to vaccination will be answered, which will include both general and specific questions depending on the vaccine to be administered.
Based on the answers to the questions, and after the doctor evaluates the clinical picture, he makes the decision to proceed with the vaccination and write a prescription.
Likewise, the Vaccination Center enters the details of the vaccine packaging in the electronic application, which was used for the vaccination of the citizen. In this way, the traceability and pharmacovigilance process is enhanced.
Vaccination centers
There will be 245 centers in Athens and 123 in Thessaloniki.
The 1,018 vaccination centers that will operate per Health District are the following:
- In the 1st RAE, which includes the Attica hospitals, a total of 245 centers will operate,
- A total of 135 centers will be established in the 2nd SAR, which includes Piraeus and the Aegean Islands,
- 123 will be the centers in the 3rd RAE of Macedonia – Thessaloniki,
