In a post on his personal Facebook account, Dr. Elias Tsioulis, who works as an intensivist-pulmonologist at Kavala General Hospital (GNC), captures the drama of our peers with severe mental and motor deprivation, who have been diagnosed with coronavirus and suddenly find themselves alone in life after the sudden loss of their parents.

Last Saturday, Dr. Elias Tsioulis was in charge of the on-call hospital. As he points out, about 100 people came to be examined. He had to make about forty admissions, most of which were infected with coronavirus and were relatively young people. The hospital administrator even had to open a covid clinic so that all patients could be cared for. But the image that surprised him was that of a 45-year-old man who was crying loudly for an hour. Terrified, upset, high fever, dehydrated, hungry …

The image of a man “45 years old, innocent childish mind, immobile arms, immobile legs, immobile and the diagnosis of autism who gave birth to a baby.” They brought him in the middle of the night on so many stretchers. The same image everywhere, the same words everywhere. Pneumonia, little oxygen, this introduction, that house, we need help guys, we don’t catch it / who can hear you. “Unfortunately, no one will listen to you,” describes Dr. Tsioulis in his post.

Earlier, EKAB rescuers, accompanied by the police, had transported the 45-year-old man to GNK. He lived with his elderly mother in their home in a Kavala neighborhood. It was the unfortunate woman’s boyfriend who, after repeated unanswered phone calls, turned to the police. When the police arrived at the scene, they had to break down the door to enter the house, where they found the 90-year-old woman dead and the 45-year-old woman next to her in poor condition.

How the incident happened

Mr. Tsioulis describes the scene in his post: “The police broke the door. Hug him next to the mother. Fetal posture, calm and flying. Both coronaviruses, I recommend staying at home. Avoid socializing, not the house full of people. Leave May the world avoid them all their lives and now they have the advantage. The mother has been dead for days and this is crying, crying … All night, out of breath with little oxygen, immobile between stretchers in a hurry and indifferent people crying. .. ».

The doctor estimates that the mother was dead for more than two 24 hours. And his son, because of his state, thirsty, hungry, dirty, agitated, with a very high fever. According to rescuers, both tested positive for the coronavirus, had been tested and had been advised to stay home.

The mother died of a heart attack and, as Mr. Tsioulis points out, “when the 45-year-old arrived, it was a stage prior to intubation. His lungs were in very bad condition, he could barely breathe and he had a high fever. But he cried, cried out loud for hours. “But not because of his condition, but I think because he realized the death of his mother.”

GNK workers union president Katerina Petraki, who was also on duty that night, speaking to APE-MPE, says of the incident: “It was very difficult to find the details of the 45-year-old man. He had no relatives, was not accompanied by someone who knew him. “Thanks to the police, we were able to find his personal information and declare it after his entry.”

Today, the 45-year-old man is being treated at the GNS covid clinic and his condition, as Mr. Tsioulis points out, remains critical, since, among other things, he needs extra care due to his severe mental and physical disability. , while some of his relatives are also wanted. .

“However, the big question that should concern us all”, emphasizes the doctor, “is what happens to our fellow men when their parents who took care of them die.” That night when he arrived at the hospital, I tried for an hour to calm him down, and a very difficult situation prevailed with me. Voices, stretchers, people who needed help. But the image of this man who needed more care from everyone, more attention, due to his condition, had really impacted me ”.

The doctor, for the last six months, has been working in the ICU of the GNC and, speaking with the Athens News Agency, talks about an unprecedented situation. “I worked”, he emphasizes, “five years in Sweden and nine years in Greece, but I had never seen such a situation, as if we were having a war.” GNC is one of the best organized provincial hospitals. In a very short time, he created a second ICU in order to meet the growing needs that existed. Now that we are talking, the ICU for covid cases, with twelve beds, is full. Maybe today a patient can leave. But we really need to do our best to get through it. We must all strictly observe all sanitary measures. “

The poignant message:

45 years old, mind of an innocent child, immobile hands, immobile legs, immobile and the diagnosis of autism that gave him the first …
