The traffic of the avenue Atenas-Sounio, in the direction of Sounio, will be opened to traffic on Saturday morning, after the completion of the works on the “Lombarda” tunnel (Karamanlis Holes).
On October 10, after bad weather “Ianos”, the competent services found that a capillary crack in the rock had dangerously deepened.
A geotechnical specialist was called to the site, who confirmed that there was a high probability that the rock would detach, so the order was given to close the road and begin work.
How the 100-ton rock was cut
Since the rock could not be cut with explosives because it would affect all the rock and possibly destroy the tunnel, the uninterrupted cutting method was decided upon, with a special drill called a wagon drill.
During the course of the works it was found that the interior of the rock was healthy, so the tunnel, which connects the capital with Sounio, remained intact.
The detached mass, with the help of technology and machine operators, fell to the road and was dismembered. The pieces of rock were used for the wire boxes, the so-called zarzanets. With them, a four-meter-high wall was built on both sides of the road to contain water and stones.
A wing wall, that is, a fence, was placed over the tunnel to exclude the slightest possibility of a stone falling from the cleaning.
