Janos: Expert warning: don’t be complacent

The next few hours are very critical as the bad weather “Ianos” has made its presence felt in areas of western Greece and in the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Ithaca with the state mechanism on alert.

The Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, stressed that the next few hours are critical, while intense meteorological phenomena and heavy rains are expected.

The professor of Natural Disaster Management at the University of Athens, Efthymios Lekkas, spoke with “Society Hour MEGA” about the course of cyclone “Ianos”.

As Mr. Lekkas pointed out, the expected rain has not occurred so far, but the winds in the areas where the cyclone passes are very strong.

“The big question is the direction the hurricane will take in the next few hours. We must be very cautious because as we have seen in the last two hurricanes, in 2017 and 2018, the course it followed, despite the forecasts, was strange”, noted the professor at the University of Athens.

“We hope they ended up somewhere else and eventually found themselves somewhere else,” added Efthymios Lekkas, emphasizing that this makes scientists mistrust the course of the phenomenon.

At the same time, Mr. Lekkas pointed out that “when a hurricane enters the land, it discharges slowly, due to the mountainous massifs and is not strengthened by the sea. But when it goes to the coastal area, on the one hand it is reinforced by sea and unloaded on land ”.

“According to initial forecasts, the phenomena should have been much more intense than we have so far. However, as with the course of the hurricane, we cannot have an accurate picture, due to what happens with the intensity of the phenomena, ”concluded Mr. Lekkas.

Speaking to SKAI, the supervisor of the Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology at the Academy of Athens, Christos Zerefos was clear. He said: “No one should be complacent and say that the meteorologists did not meet their forecasts. It is a very deep system and will dump a lot of water mainly on the west coast of the Peloponnese. He also said that he is concerned, apart from this area to Messinia and the islands Ionian “.

“It may be misleading, but there is a forecast for extreme events and their slow movement is misleading,” said Mr. Zerefos.
