Janos devastates the country: one dead – 2450 calls to the Fire Brigade and 619 rescues

A woman was taken dead from her home in a settlement in Farsala, while the data provided by the Fire Service to the public is shocking and shows the magnitude of the destruction caused by cyclone Janos in our country.

Due to the dangerous meteorological phenomena caused by cyclone Ianos in various parts of Greece, from the early hours of Friday to midnight, the Fire Service took an old woman dead from her home, has received 2450 calls for help and water pumps, while 619 liberation and rescue.

The Fire Brigade’s operations, which are ongoing, are mainly concentrated in southern Ionian, western Greece, central Greece and Thessaly.

Analytically:

• In southern Ionian (Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos and Lefkada) the Fire Services have received 750 calls and so far 93 rescues, 308 bombs, 198 fellings of trees and 35 removal of objects have been carried out.

• In Western Greece (Achaia, Ilia, Etoloakarnania), the Fire Services have received 63 calls and so far 24 bombings and 39 logging have been carried out.

• In central Greece (Lamia, Loutra Ypatis, Lianokladi, Makrakomi and Mexiates) the Fire Services have received 230 calls and so far there have been 76 rescues, 91 bombs and 2 felling of trees.

• In Thessaly (Magnesia, Farsala, Karditsa, Mouzaki, Rouso and Sofades) the Firefighters have received 630 calls and so far 450 rescues, 120 bombs and 40 felling of trees have been carried out.

The rescue in Almyros

Likewise, the rescue operation of three people was completed in the Almyros Volos area, where they were trapped in a torrent.

To cope with the incident, 18 firefighters tried with special equipment to rescue rapids, 1 special tracked vehicle and 1 rescue boat and were released unconscious from a nursing home in the Vassili settlement, in Farsala, Thessaly.

The Fire Brigade, in cooperation with all disaster management agencies, remains on high alert to deal with the dangers of floods, as well as the phenomena that accompany them.

Appeals to citizens

In direct cooperation with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Civil Protection, all the state services involved, as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the country, have been informed to take measures within their competence.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection advises citizens to take special care, taking care to take measures to protect themselves from the dangers derived from the occurrence of severe meteorological phenomena.

A call is made to be especially careful and in case of emergencies to faithfully follow the instructions of the authorities.
