Epidemiological data in West Attica and ten other regions of the country are of great concern, with the possibility of imposing a severe blockade, such as March, being strong.
West Attica and Kozani are mainly in the red and one step before the imposition of a strict local lockdown, while in 9 other areas the situation is characterized as particularly dangerous.
These are the following areas:
- Thessaloniki (270 cases yesterday),
- Kozani (60),
- Xanthi (27),
- Kilkis (22),
- Pieria (23),
- Pella (18),
- Drama (15),
- Rodopi (22),
- Larisa (38),
- Grevena (3)
“If necessary, the areas will be sealed …”
The alarm was first sounded a few days ago by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, when he stressed that West Attica is in “red”, citing detailed epidemiological data. Michalis Chrysochoidis was the first to speak yesterday about the possibility of tougher restrictive measures, after the meeting he had in West Attica, when he left open the possibility of sealing areas. “I don’t have much to say, in fact I only have one thing to say: no one can shake their head. We are here to help, explain, help, but nobody is in the lead. Otherwise the areas will be sealed, even from house to house. It is not a threat or a warning. It is a decision and it will be made if necessary “, usually mentioned by Michalis Chrysochoidis.
It should be noted that today the Minister of Citizen Protection will be in Kozani, for a meeting with local agencies, due to the prevailing concerns about the high epidemiological burden.
Yesterday, government spokesman Stelios Petsas, speaking with Parapolitika 90.1, asked citizens to take special care during the holidays so that there is no resurgence of cases, emphasizing that “There is no case of relaxation of the measures, there is only a tightening.”
Shortly after yesterday afternoon, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias began briefing journalists in a dramatic tone, reporting and calling attention to 10 specific areas of the country that are in the red. He described the situation as “serious” Kozani and West Attica He also said that the situation is getting worse in Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Kilkis, Pieria, Pella, Drama, Rodopi, Larissa, Grevena (3) and indirectly warned with severe local blockades. “If the epidemiological data worsens, the measures will be reevaluated.” said the Minister of Health.
West Attica and Kozani infectious disease specialists met
Infectious disease specialists met overnight, considering the possibility of proposing a March-type lockdown (with business closures and increased population testing) in Aspropyrgos and Elefsina, due to the increased epidemiological burden. Similar concerns are expressed for some neighboring municipalities. Their meeting would continue this morning. In any case, the experts will make their suggestion and the final decision will be made by the government.
Vatopoulos, Gogos leave open the possibility of imposing tougher measures
As microbiology professor Alkiviadis Vatopoulos explained, speaking with SKAI, imposing a lockdown, such as March, is being considered in some areas of western Attica (Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Mandra) and northern Greece (Kozani), after the increase explosive cases. “In Aspropyrgos and West Attica there are large industries that are extremely difficult to fulfill. In these areas, there is a case for universal lockdown, as in March, to reduce mobility and prevent the spread of the virus.” This also applies to Gran Brittany in some areas “.
He pointed out that yesterday the Commission was informed about the prevailing situation in West Attica, however, after relevant questions, he clarified that he meant that the current situation was discussed yesterday by scientists. “We have to run a little further behind the facts, because afterwards it is understood that perhaps he should have taken action earlier,” added Mr. Vatopoulos.
Professor Charalambos Gogos, for his part, described as “serious” the problem of the increase in cases of coronavirus in the so-called “red” areas.

Speaking to ANT1 and the “Good Morning Greece” program, the professor and committee member, who also met yesterday, said that today there may be announcements for a March-type shutdown in these areas, including western Attica and western Macedonia. .
“If we have in Athens what we have in Thessaloniki, imagine what is going to happen, that is why measures must be taken in specific areas,” he said, stressing that “the problem is serious, we cannot let it delay.”
Tsakris: the possibility of a stricter lockdown is open in January
Meanwhile, the possibility of imposing a harsher lockdown in January, even corresponding to March, left EKPA professor of microbiology Athanasios Tsakris open as, as he pointed out, a larger outbreak of the virus is expected next month.
“We are entering a difficult month. We may have the vaccine, which is certainly noteworthy and will play an important role in managing the epidemic, but in January we expect a larger outbreak of the virus, with a resurgence of the second wave. It may be worse than what we experienced in November. That is why Europe is preparing to prevent the worst. It has to do with the weather conditions, but also with the coloring during the holidays. Therefore, there may be an extension of the existing blockage in January or even more, like March, ”the professor told SKAI.
