Incredible case of a 45-year-old young man: he fell ill with coronavirus 4 times

US scientists report the case of a 45-year-old man in whose body the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus relapsed and reappeared four times, rapidly mutated in his body during this time and ultimately led to death. The incident, according to scientists, shows that the virus can show not only many months of resistance, but also rapid development within a person, if the latter’s immune system malfunctions.

Researchers at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston and Harvard University, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, according to Nature, reported that the patient had a chronic autoimmune disorder and therefore was treated with strong immunosuppressive drugs.

About 40 days after the initial diagnosis that the man was positive for the coronavirus, subsequent tests showed that the virus now showed a tendency to escape. But it came back stronger despite antiviral treatment with redmesivir and cocktail antibodies. The patient’s infection showed a new remission, but it was repeated two more times, before the man finally died of shock and respiratory failure, five months after the initial infection.

Subsequent genomic analysis showed that the man had not been infected with the coronavirus multiple times, but the original virus had shown resistance and rapid mutation in his body.
