Elefsina, Aspropyrgos and Mandra entered a strict lockdown as of today, while there are concerns about the course of the pandemic in 10 other areas.

The government oligarchy to take selective measures in the class-abandoned West Attica of large industrial units, led to decisions after a celebration despite the cry of agony from local authorities who have timely expressed their concerns about the high epidemiological burden that observed in the region.

The expansion scenario of the Western Attica model is on the table of the authorities for the northern parts of Greece and the situation continues to be particularly difficult as the viral load does not decrease despite the measures.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to show its teeth in the country despite the restrictive measures in place. Thus, once again, yesterday a four-digit number of cases was announced, with 1,155 new infections. At the same time, 542 patients are being treated by intubation in the ICU, keeping the pressure on the health system.

Another 78 people died, bringing the total number of victims to 3,948.

According to the data on the geographical distribution of the cases, except Attica and Thessaloniki, a higher number of infections was observed in Kilkis, Xanthi, Pieria, Drama, Rodopi, Grevena, Pella and Larissa.

The Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, went to Thessaloniki on Thursday to personally assess the situation, ahead of the Christmas holidays, while the eyes of the experts remain focused on northern Greece, where the situation is explosive. The possibility of announcing “West Attica” measures is not ruled out.

They knew

“A week ago we were informed about the situation in the area and then we were informed that there is a serious problem,” West Attica Deputy Governor Lefteris Kosmopoulos told SKAI 100.3.

As he mentioned, the only information about the situation that the local authorities had was the image they had obtained of the school departments that were closed for the cases.

According to the lieutenant governor, a memorandum had been sent to the competent bodies, mentioning the dangers to the area. According to Mr. Kosmopoulos, the next day they sent a ladder and tested the residents only in Elefsina and then no tests were carried out.

“See and do”

A few days before Christmas, the government is basically turning 180 degrees, opting for more restrictive measures, proving once again that it is moving late and after a holiday, in the logic of “see and do”, without a specific plan and a feasible schedule, consistently the pandemic continues unabated in the country.

The government’s stance on the pandemic has been widely criticized by opposition parties. In fact, on the occasion of the stricter closure in Western Attica, SYRIZA and the KKE demanded the shielding of the workplaces and the support of the affected employees.
