The road is opening for the demolition of the facilities of the old Elliniko airport, except, of course, the buildings that have been designated as conservable. The demolition permit for approximately 450 buildings in the concession areas in Elliniko and Agios Kosmas was published in the Government Gazette and the excavators are now ready to enter the area to begin the first phase of the project.

The demolition permit for some 450 buildings on the “plot” of Elliniko and Agios Kosmas was published in the Government Gazette. This is the end of a process that began in April, after the legal regulation “legalization” of all buildings, in order not to follow the usual arbitrary procedure.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Development (240D), the positive opinions of the Central Archaeological Council (KAS), the Central Council of Modern Monuments (KSNM) and the Central Council of Architecture (KESEA), after his request, preceded him. Based on these opinions, but also on the regulation of the “legalization” of Law 4663/20, the Ministry formally finds “the legality of the facilities that have been erected with or without permission.” The decision concerns about 450 buildings (958 construction volumes), mainly old airport facilities.

Obviously excluded from the demolition are those listed: the three aviation sheds (declared protected in 2009), the Saarinen building – former eastern airport (2006) and the English shed, known as the “pagoda” ( 2016). In addition, a building was included on the west side of the plot (at the intersection of 27th and El. Venizelou streets, approximately opposite the EMY building) that has not been declared a listed building and that housed the Accounting Supply Center (LEK) of the CAA. In addition, EYDAP, PPC, tram and subway facilities, Agios Kosmas and Damianos, Agia Paraskevi and Agia Triada temples, Olympic baseball and canoe-kayak slalom, as well as specific CAA buildings are excluded from demolition. These buildings were also “legitimized” by arrest (if they had, for example, any illegal extensions or modifications).

According to the decision, the Ministry of Development’s “act of verification” is a demolition permit, so the way for its implementation is now open, as no further special legislative approvals or regulations are required.
