In Athens, Ankara is trying to put the blame

In an attempt not only to deny responsibility but also to further its narrative of the demilitarization of the northeastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands, which it persistently seeks to introduce into exploratory contacts, Ankara again delivered itself to a six-point briefing document.

This movement, while completely forgetting what was agreed in the German mediation on the subject of exploratory talks, is also not alien to what has been recently discussed in NATO as part of the discussions on a conflict prevention mechanism.

Corona virus “kills” soccer: diving into transfers due to pandemic

In the note, entitled “Climbing steps in the eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean from September 12, 2020”, the Turkish side tries to “justify” the new departure of the seismographic research vessel “Oruc Reis” in the eastern Mediterranean between October 12 – 22. It is also surprising that Turkey also refers to the supply of drones from Israel by Greece as an indication that Greece is making the situation worse in the region.

Ankara insists that after agreeing to leave the eastern Mediterranean “Oruc Reis” on September 12, the Greek side has posed a number of challenges. He points out that just one day later, on September 13, Greek Navy ships deployed to Kastellorizo, where the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, came to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the island’s liberation. Next, reference is made to the joint Greek-American military exercise that took place in Thrace between September 14 and 18 “where the Turkish minority lives.”

The entire history of the demilitarization of the islands unfolds in the continuation of the note. As emphasized, on September 15, Greece issued NAVTEX for fire drills in Chios and September 23-24 in Lemnos. It is then accused of issuing NOTAM (A2735 / 20) for exercises near Chios, Kos, Rhodes between September 27 and October 2 that impede aviation security in international airspace, as well as for planning exercises. for August 6 and 8 in areas south of Kastellorizo.

Ankara does not stop here. With the citation of detailed maps, it refers to a new Greek NOTAM (A2931 / 20) with which Greece commits areas for Air Force and Navy exercises in the Aegean Sea from November 11 to December 29.

Furthermore, it notes that on October 8, a fire drill was scheduled for Lesbos from October 12 to 13, while on October 9 another fire drill was announced near Chios (October 12 to 16).

Ankara accuses Greece of issuing two NAVTEXs for two exercises on Turkey’s national holiday (October 29) and has responded with exercises for October 28. Of course, NOTAM could not be absent from the Turkish record of exercises in Greece during the period from 13 to 18 October that will hamper the work of “Oruc Reis”.
