The damage suffered by the Navy minesweeper “Kallisto” is particularly serious, that collided with a merchant ship in the morning outside the port of Piraeus.

According to the information, the ship literally split in two. After all, it is characteristic that his trailer in the port of Salamina was made in two parts.

The same information, in fact, states that it is considered practically impossible for the damage to be repaired, so that “Kallisto” can regain its navigability.

According to information from the Coast Guard officers who had been in charge of coordinating the rescue and towing operation, the Polish captain of the freighter is already referring the Central Port Authority of Piraeus which is carrying out the preliminary investigation.

No arrest yet

At the moment there is no conception, but a development that can happen later.

According to the same sources, a total of 22 sailors, all foreigners, were on board the Portuguese-flagged ship anchored off the port.

The boat will be inspected by a classification society to determine if it is seaworthy.

During the preliminary investigation, the testimonies of passengers and pilots of other adjacent vessels that may have seen how the collision occurred will be sought, while the members of the “Kallisto” crew will also be examined.

Check the “black box”

For the investigation of the causes of the accident, the control of the device that collects data from the cargo ship, something like the so-called “black box”, will be crucial.

The inspection will reveal many of the circumstances of the accident, that is, the speed at which he was sailing, his exact position, the captain’s conversations with other floating vessels or even with the Navy ship.

It is observed that during the towing of the minesweeper, the captain and three other crew members remained, while the two injured were transported by PN boat to the Naval Hospital.

The first data on the conflict

According to Coast Guard officials, during the departure of the freighter, there was a navigator on its bridge, as planned.

When disembarking, the truck was traveling at a speed of 16 knots, a speed considered within the prescribed limits.

Then there is a big deceleration at all eight nodes and then at 5, while in its attempt to dodge the minesweeper, it makes one last maneuver, without finally avoiding the collision.
