When investigating the public disclosure of personal data, Kaspersky researchers looked for two important consequences: doxing, which is the public anonymization of a person on the Internet, and the sale of personal data on the dark web.
As they point out, doxing, which could be described as a method of cyberbullying, can affect any user who has an Internet presence or who does not conform to the subjective standards of other users.
Doxing occurs when a person shares private information about another person without their consent to expose, damage, or endanger them. Users generally do not expect their personal information to be leaked in public, and even if they do, they do not anticipate the harm it may cause them. But, as practice shows, with particularly determined criminals or malicious users, doxing can potentially turn into target account hacking, a service offered in today’s dark markets.
Data at a cost of less than a coffee
At the same time, they revealed the cost of securing a person’s personal data on the Internet, which in many cases can cost less than a coffee.
Analyzing the active offerings in 10 international forums and dark web markets, they found that access to personal data can start as low as $ 50 per dollar for an identification, depending on the depth and breadth of the data offered. Plus, personal medical records and selfies with personal identification documents cost up to $ 40.
Some of the personal information is still in demand like a decade ago, mainly credit card data, banking services and access to electronic payment services, and their respective prices have remained unchanged in recent years.
Finally, as people’s awareness of privacy issues increases, 37% of millennials believe they are too boring to be victims of digital crime.
Data sold in the dark market can be used for extortion, fraud and phishing programs and instant theft. Certain types of data, such as access to personal accounts or password databases, can be misused not only for financial gain, but also for reputational damage and other types of societal harm, including doxing.
