The Professor of Cardiology, AUTh and treasurer of the Hellenic Cardiological Society, is being treated at the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki. Vassilis Vasilikos, who got sick from coronavirus.
The cardiologist in a text describes the days of his hospitalization and captures his thoughts on the course of the pandemic in the country and the battle that the country’s doctors and nurses are called upon to face.
As he says, “Whining and the pursuit of responsibilities at this stage is at least evil and dangerous for society as a whole.”
In fact, as he shockingly describes, “The biggest problem is not how many ICU beds we have available. Hell is the 250 patients with moderate grade, but also severe symptoms».
Vasilikos urges medical students and the Faculty of Health Sciences to contribute to the fight against the deadly virus and help the country’s health system.

“Reflections on the coronavirus and related issues
Since last Sunday I have been admitted to the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki with bilateral COVID pneumonia. It was preceded by a week with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The test was positive 3 days after the onset of symptoms!
Recommendations:
4 doctors from the clinic are positive, the 2 patients (the oldest !!!) and 7 nurses from the clinic are positive.
Hospitalization:
Incredible self-sacrifice of the medical and nursing staff. There is at least one adequacy of drugs and medical supplies, which creates security. The infrastructure urgently needs staff, mainly nursing. The biggest problem is not how many ICU beds we have available. Hell is the 250 patients with moderate but also severe symptoms, most of whom are almost unable to perform basic functions, drink water, turn on the oxygen supply, make everyday life evident to all of you …
Complaining and seeking responsibility after this stage is at least malicious and dangerous for society as a whole. The patient (including me) is now interested in whether Mitsotakis or Tsipras are to blame. What matters to him is that someone feed him, change him, give him water to drink, charge his cell phone !!! In more organized societies there is a similar lack of attention.
Proposal:
Students of Medicine and of the Faculty of Health Sciences, young revolutionary volunteers attend hospitals in an organized way in consultation with the Administration of the Medical Department and Hospital Administrations and offer their services, take it for granted, without fanaticism and great theatrical. The patient is waiting for your care, your good speech, the obvious of everyday life that are not replaced only by the hiring of staff. LUCKY, there is as much medical and pharmaceutical care as possible. The maturity and cohesion of a society is manifested in the uninterrupted functioning of the little everyday things that make life easier for us.
I would like to thank all of you for your sincere and unconditional interest. But my main duty is to commend the selflessness and contribution of my treating physicians, nurses and supervisors who care for us in an incomparable way, my associates and the Administration.
ΥΓ. To the nice colleagues from the State of AADE who decided to resign from their duties, I wish that they do not pass through the doors of hospitals as patients.
