In the language of technology it could also be described as “Digital heart attack” what happened at the Düsseldorf University Hospital, the largest hospital in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with a population of 18 million. Suddenly, where everything was working normally, they died. Computers, telephones, digital material with patient records and even the operating rooms were impossible to operate, not even for serious incidents. The result was that an entire hospital was closed and it could not handle any incidents. A whole hospital target hackers!
The patient was transferred to the Wuppertal Hospital.
“No ambulance, no helicopter could move,” said Frank Snyder, the hospital’s medical director. “Outpatient clinics are dead. It was a scary time for us and patients.” The unusual incident happened last week. Hackers “locked down” 30 servers, as announced by a local government representative. They left a blackmail letter to one of them so that the university authorities could contact them without asking for money. It would probably be one of many cases of cyber attacks hackers in electronic systems of companies, government services, ministries and even parliaments if a woman who entered the emergency room that night and had to be operated immediately did not pay with her life.
But it was absolutely impossible because everything was paralyzed. Thus, in the same ambulance, the woman was transported to Wuppertal, 30 kilometers from the University Hospital of Düsseldorf. The trip takes only 30 minutes. But the patient could not bear it and finished. It’s probably the first case of cyberattack with deaths. The Wuppertal prosecutor’s office has taken up the criminal part of the case.
Hackers were sorry!
But there is another aspect that is also unusual. The perpetrators were wrong. His target was the university, as confirmed by Christoph Hebecker of the Cologne prosecution service. “Based on what happened, we assume that it was a mistake, that the perpetrators did not want to block the servers of the University Hospital but of the University of Düsseldorf.” And when they found out that an entire hospital had died, they repented and gave the passwords to unlock the servers.
Many conclusions about cyber security can be drawn from the fatal incident. For the Düsseldorf University Hospital there is a race en route to get back to normal. “It will take a few more weeks,” says Frank Snyder. “To date, several sectors have returned to operate. Outpatient clinics reopened. Patients call and ask if they can come or come. We hope that next week we can attend to emergencies ”.
