A response from the British Guardian newspaper in Brussels speaks of the threat of Cyprus to block the sanctions that the EU wants to impose on Belarus.
According to the report, Nicosia is reacting to this “veto threat” by rejecting the imposition of similar sanctions against Turkey for its illegal actions in the eastern Mediterranean.
The newspaper adds that the Cypriot stance has “disappointed” the EU diplomats.
Measures against the Lukashenko government include an assets freeze and travel ban on 40 officials and are expected to be ratified by the General Affairs Council on Monday.
Diplomatic sources told The Guardian that the problem was “serious”, that Nicosia was “basically imposing sanctions against Belarus as a hostage”, that “everyone is angry, everyone is upset” and that this could have consequences (for Cyprus ) “.
The newspaper also cites President Anastasiadis as urging the EU to use its means to pressure Turkey to stop its illegal activities.
The report also states that “many EU leaders oppose new sanctions against Turkey.”
