The Greek F-16s assumed the role of escorting the B-52s within the Athens and Nicosia FIR with a route over Epirus, Macedonia, the Northern Sporades, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and western Cyprus.
Four pairs of F-16 aircraft of the Greek Air Force accompanied, on Wednesday, September 16, two US B-52 strategic bombers in flight as part of Operation Hook.
According to an announcement by the General Staff of National Defense (GEETHA), the Greek fighters accompanied the American bombers, at the request of USEUCOM.
The Greek F-16s assumed the role of escorting the B-52s within the Athens and Nicosia FIR with a route over Epirus, Macedonia, the Northern Sporades, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and western Cyprus.
From there, according to GEETHA, the British fighters took over the escort, while on their return, at the same point, the American bombers were again received by the Greek fighters, moving over the Dodecanese, north of Crete, the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands, when they left the Athens FIR.
It is observed that American bombers are escorted for the second time in a few weeks. as the previous one took place on August 28, 2020, as part of NATO’s “Allied Sky” operation.
According to the announcement, the participation of our country in the “Hook” operation demonstrates the strategic relationship between Greece and the United States, which is constantly updated with the implementation of joint training and joint missions.
The continued presence of units and means of the Armed Forces in the Eastern Mediterranean demonstrates the possibilities of implementing multiple missions in the broader region, concludes the GEETHA announcement.
