The objective is for both parties to develop a technical text of principles. According to a diplomatic source who informed the press in Brussels about diplomatic movements within NATO in recent weeks, following the Secretary-General’s initiative, Greece discussed only the technical terms for the withdrawal of the Greek and Turkish military forces in Eastern Mediterranean.
Last week, Greek diplomatic sources reported that a Greek official went to the office of the chairman of the NATO Military Committee to comment on the Greek side’s comments on the NATO secretary general’s proposals for a possible de-escalation mechanism.
The Chairman of the Military Committee asked the Greek officer for a series of clarifications on the comments made.
According to diplomatic sources, there was no dialogue with the Turkish official. Furthermore, the Greek side stressed that the reports of “exchange of views” circulating by Turkey in the context of “technical discussions” are part of Turkey’s ongoing effort to present a misrepresentation in order to to avoid the imposition of sanctions on their actions.
In any case, the withdrawal of Oruc Reis was a positive “signal” for the start of technical discussions, something that the Prime Minister highlighted in his speech at TIF. The basic condition established by the Greek side is the cessation of Turkey’s unilateral actions and the end of the provocation in the Aegean.
