Athletic, however, was not only represented by Muniain at the award ceremony. The great scorer of the Lions, Aritz andurith, who would have played the final if it were held last year (mediated by his withdrawal from action), stayed on the field and congratulated all the players of the Society.

Officially, the president of Athletic, Aitor elithegi, despite his bitterness, he did not hesitate to hug his Society counterpart, Jokin Aperibay, in a movement that constitutes example for presidents within and, above all, outside the Spanish borders (if you want to tell me what I mean …).

Aperibay, however, received another “bravo” that he probably would not have expected. THE Ίνιγο Μαρτίνεθ, with whom he had three years to exchange conversation, swallowed the pain and congratulated him on his first cup in 34 years.

The player, that is to say, that in January 2018 he left the Society to go to Athletic and, in his presentation for the Lions, he had said that “I came to a great team and here it is not enough to finish in the middle of the classification”.

THE “traitor”, as seen in San Sebastián, fell in penalty fee who judged the final (as life brings them …), had the only good opportunity for Athletic goals and saw his former teammates lift a trophy, something he could not do, although he hopes … to recover next Saturday (4/17) against Barcelona and the same stadium.

The coach’s motive Imanol Alguathil, who in December 2018 took over as an official in his place Ander Garitano, boldly stated that “I do not do for this job”, but he (and) refused, won perpetuation with his sword and led his heart team to the first title since 1987 (Copa again), just a few months before entering the Society’s infrastructure departments.

Last, but not last, leader of the final and scorer of the historic goal. THE Mikel Ojarthabal (left in the photo above) was born to play for Real Sociedad, the jersey he wore as a child, dreaming of reaching the first team.

From the age of 14 at Thumbieta, eight years later he was going to score the most important goal of his career and life. Despite coming from two consecutive missed penalties, being so far perfectly accurate, he caught the ball, sent it to the Athletic net and fulfilled his dream.

But also the dream of hundreds of thousands of his teammates – fans, who could not go to Seville due to the pandemic, but came out to the balconies of San Sebastián and celebrated a title – redemption. The dream of the veteran journalist of the station “Cadena Cope”, Mauri Idiaketh, who crying in the air said that “At 58 I did not think that I would experience something like this again and now I can die in peace”.

Mikel himself surprised me her tears after the end of the fight and the realization of what he had achieved, dedicating the title to his family and friends who were not by his side, but mainly to those who died from the damn Covid-19. Zorionak Txapeldun (congratulations to the Basque champion)!
