A major fire is ongoing in a forest area in the Agios Vlasis Sofikos area in Corinth. The fire broke out in the early hours of Friday, as strong winds were blowing in the area.
The fire broke out at 2.30 in the morning and burns in an inaccessible area of Laka. A total of 88 firefighters will operate with 4 groups of pedestrians, 23 vehicles, 4 airplanes and 5 helicopters. Volunteer and aquifer assistance.
The fire front does not threaten a residential area, however the settlements of Korfos, Ilios – Swiss and Kiourkati were evacuated.
Neighbors have gone down to the beach according to a plan where they have sailed fishing while the port is on alert in case it is considered necessary to get them out of there.
The inhabitants are many but the majority are vacationers. The mayor spoke of about 2,000 people.
According to the mayor of Corinth, Vassilis Nanopoulos, who spoke with SKAI, “the wind is strong and the fire has a front of 4-5 km, while it is about 2 km from the town.” We are waiting for the air means. The fire front burns with pine trees and in combination with the strong winds complicates the work of the firefighters.
At the moment – according to the mayor’s statements to SKAI – there is no immediate danger to the lives of the neighbors. Nanopoulos even left open the possibility of arson.
