The next period on the coronavirus front is crucial, according to Patras University Medicine Professor Charalambos Gogos.
Speaking to the main ANT1 newsletter, Mr. Gogos noted that although “today we had a small reduction in the number of cases […] we have to see that he continues to have a better state of mind against the virus. ”
The professor of Medicine noted that, at this time, “there is a lot of pressure on the system” as cases continue to increase, while more patients with Covid-19 need hospitalization, some of them in ICU.
“All of this shows that the situation is critical and we must do what we can to reverse it,” Gogos said.
Take action for coronavirus before winter
“Reduce the degree of pressure in the system because the most difficult winter season will come, when we will have more difficult situations and the system will be subject to more pressure,” added Charalambos Gogos.
As he said, from mid-autumn they will begin to add to the cases of the new coronavirus and those of the common flu and other respiratory infections, as well as other common infections that can affect the same vulnerable population.
“At the same time, it is the indoor configuration, we will lose the advantage of open space, ventilation and all that helps a lot to limit the transmission of the virus,” the professor of Medicine also pointed out.
“The data we have at the moment is such that it should prompt us to take steps in that direction,” he continued.
There is an additional package for the coronavirus if necessary.
Gogos explained what the main objective of the experts on the coronavirus front is, which refers to reducing the spread of the virus in the community.
“If the measures do not lead to where we want, that is, to reduce new cases, from Rt below 1 and we see that things are going, of course there is the next package of measures.
“There is always a package of measures for each phase,” he said, adding, however, that “the measures already taken are quite strict and we have reasonable hopes of stabilizing the situation and narrowing the spread.”
As has become clear in recent days and as Mr. Gogos has repeated, “our problem at the moment is to reduce dispersion in the community, especially in Attica.”
Rapid tests for coronavirus are an important tool.
Along with the new workplace measures, the government announced new coronavirus tests, the so-called rapid tests that will give results for the virus within minutes.
The professor of medicine believes that these tests will be of great help to stop the virus. “One of the problems that we now have both with the control of dispersion in different population groups and with the process of control and management of patients in the emergency services is to have a quick and effective diagnosis and the separation of the positive from the negative, ”he explained.
So if the rapid tests turn out to be reliable, which Gogos says appears to be, then the experts will have a very powerful tool for rapid diagnosis of positive coronavirus cases.
