Coronavirus – All the news: The testimony of the Giannitsa Hospital Pathologist, Emmanouilias Kehagia, is shocking, due to the unprecedented conditions that medical personnel lived through and continue to face, with the coronavirus pandemic.
On the one hand, one patient after another, to give their last breath. Despair, sadness and despair “painted” on the faces of doctors and nurses who, despite their incredible struggle, during all this time, see many of their patients “leave”.
On the other hand, patients whose lives were held by a “thread” and who no one knew if they would succeed, to finally leave the ICU “triumphant”, to be intubated and flood the medical staff with relief and joy.
They are the two sides of the great struggle that is unfolding, in hospitals especially in northern Greece, including in the Giannitsa hospital.
Talking to GRTimes.gr, Pathologist, Curator `A of the Pathology Clinic of Giannitsa Hospital, Emmanouilia Kehagia, describes how the hospital staff lives these extremely difficult moments, in the greatest health crisis that hit our country in its recent history.
“We are living unprecedented moments, which we could not even imagine a few months ago. We were called in to deal with some extremely difficult situations, “says the doctor who regrets that the virus has not been so friendly lately with the ages of 40 to 60 years.” People who got worse very quickly were relatively young at these ages. , especially 40 to 50 years. “Contrary to what we heard in the first wave of the pandemic,” Ms. Kehagia says, adding that among the younger patients in earlier ages, there were also people without underlying diseases, some of whom were unsuccessful.
According to the doctor, the Giannitsa hospital, in the pre-Covid 19 period had 6 ICU beds, but then had to develop a total of about 12, which lately are 100% full. “The ICUs are emptied and filled immediately.” Some intubated patients need to wait a few hours until they find a bed, either in the ICU at Giannitsa hospital or in another hospital in northern Greece. “
Speaking of the clinic where she works, the Pathology, Ms. Kehagia estimates that despite the adverse conditions, so far she has faced 100%, a fact that she attributes to its director, Mr. Ioannis Kakoulidis, whom she characterizes as ” combative and dignified “.
“We fell and got up at the same time”
When asked how medical and nursing staff experienced so many losses, Ms. Kehagia responds that they all outdone themselves many times over. “At first we thought we would not be successful. We fell and got up at the same time.” There is no luxury for a second thought, in what we live, in what we go through and in what we are going through, “he says, adding that especially the last two weeks have been extremely tragic.
Trying to describe the dramatic moments of the losses he cannot find words. After all, thinking, as he emphasizes, is a luxury. “And, honestly, there are no words to describe this situation. It is not just that the patient feels relieved… To please you, to please someone around them (communication is only allowed by phone), situations are tragic.” Nobody can describe it, the human mind doesn’t fit, “he says.
Regarding the patients leaving the ICU, Ms. Kegachia says that it is the “great joy” of all. “Once we get dressed and enter the Covid clinic, we first have to go through the intubation room to have something of value. Those who came out winners give us the courage to continue. I think this is the satisfaction of a doctor. Nothing. plus”.
Volunteer help is invaluable
As was next, many employees of the Giannitsa hospital who were hit by the coronavirus, as a result of which the pressure on the rest of the staff increased a lot, which according to the doctor filled the gaps, with overtime, extra shifts and of course with the help of volunteers. doctors who came from the “Mediterranean Hospital” in Athens.
Ms. Kehagia, mentioning their names, one by one, pointed out that these doctors in recent days have committed themselves as much as possible and handle as many cases as they can, with self-denial. “Your contribution was a catalyst for us. Your help is invaluable,” he said, speaking about Mr. Byron Mardagia, Ms. Maria Petraki, Mr. Ioannis Christou, Mr. Andreas Tsifi and Ms. Anna Maria Vierou.
“A fairy to erase everything from our mind”
When asked how he sees the next period and what will remain in the future, from all this experience, the doctor at the Giannitsa hospital is categorical:
“New years are coming … I want a fairy to erase everything from our minds. Nothing more. Let’s not remember any of these days. Honestly. I say it and I shudder. I don’t want to remember anything. Let’s get out unscathed, God help us, to our patients, our families. “Let’s get out unharmed and forget everything,” he repeats.
The doctor affirms that in recent days there are some signs of improvement and that the number of people who come to the hospital to be examined has decreased slightly, with the general picture at the Covid clinic being somewhat better and expresses her optimism that if all goes well people be careful, then we can save a third wave of pandemic.
“Clearly it is not a simple flu and it is okay again to remind the world, shout Attention, Attention, Attention !!! It is a deadly virus. It may fool some, but for most it will be ruthless. Be careful even after things settle down, because we have to be vigilant. Not only the toilets. The whole world. There should be no new wave. We must not allow this. Let’s all go out to build a wall and prevent it. We are not allowed to experience this type of situation again ”, he concludes.
