Former Golden Piraeus MP and now “independent” MEP Giannis Lagos was found guilty of joining a criminal organization and its management by the Three-Member Court of Appeal for Criminal Matters.
A rumor surrounding his name had emerged in May 2019, when Michaloliakos appointed him head of the European Golden Dawn voting, firing G. Epitideios and L. Foundoulis, who may have threatened him with crucifixion. The goal was for Lagos to be elected at all costs to have immunity as a MEP.
A little later, of course, in July 2019, while he had been elected MEP, he announced his independence from the Golden Dawn.
As soon as the court’s verdict was known, Giannis Lagos made a provocative tweet, emphasizing, among other things: “This is Greek justice. Minion and slave dog of the system. I am glad to be fighting with you. I will not do anything in return.”
Life and status
Lagos, before gaining independence, had been a member of the Golden Dawn for several years, with whom he was elected MP in NW Piraeus from 2012 to 2019 and MEP in 2019.
His activities with the Nazi group had twice led to his arrest and detention on charges of criminal organization.
He has been charged in the past with extortion, pimping, groceries, illegal possession of weapons, and check violation. On September 13, 2019, he was sentenced to eight months in prison with suspension for the attack on the social space Taller in 2013.
Lagos was appointed member of the Political Council by the Michaloliakos leader. By his order, he had been appointed, in addition to being Governor of Piraeus (since 2005, as he admitted in court) “responsible for the organization of the movement” throughout Greece, he was president of the Disciplinary Council, while he allegedly participated in all three cases . to the Egyptian fishermen and the PAME trade unionists.

The Lagos-Patelis message is well known: “By the way, the communes will eat a big fall today. Thasos collected about 30 arias and they leave from there.” The conversation between Lagos and Develekos, half an hour after the attack, is also known. It says, “We leveled them, we dismantled them, they ate a lot of firewood.”
Letter to Brussels
A day before the court ruled that Golden Dawn was a criminal organization and that he was guilty of participation and leadership, Lagos, dressed in a parliamentary mantle, sent a letter to MEPs invoking the “rule of law” and “rights. humans”.
Giannis Lagos affirms, among other things, that “9 deputies were imprisoned in 2013 and 2014 without any charge for the preliminary conspiracy of the then corrupt government of Samaras. I was among them ”, he writes and adds:“ It is hypocritical to speak of the rule of law, since Greece, a member state of the EU, does not respect fundamental rights ”.
Starting in 2015, when he was released, strict conditions were imposed on G. Lagos. What will happen to immunity?
The question is what will happen when the time comes to impose and execute the sentence that the court will decide, with the immunity that Lagos enjoys, as a MEP.
The European Parliament is not investigating the criminal records of MEPs. The elected representatives of the parties of each country have the right to participate in the European Parliament. However, unlike national parliaments, decisions on waiver of immunity are more easily taken in the European Parliament.
A request from the competent authorities is required, p.
