At 10:40 am (Greek time), the three candidates for the leadership of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Armin Lasset, Friedrich Mertz and Norbert Retgen, will address the 1,001 delegates again and ask for their practical confidence. At around 3:00 p.m., the new leader who will assume leadership of the party in the post-Merkel era will be announced.

Today’s conference is the first to be held entirely electronically, due to the restrictions imposed to stop the coronavirus pandemic. Voting for the election of the leader will also take place electronically. The result will be known immediately, but will be formally validated with the calculation of the vote letter, on January 22. In other words, the 1,001 delegates will be invited to vote twice, once electronically and once by letter.

Yesterday Angela Merkel, in her last speech at a party congress as chancellor, although she refrained from commenting on the candidates, wished “a team to win, which will take over the fate of our party.” His wish was interpreted as indirect support for the candidacy of Armin Lassett, who announces that he is a candidate for the CDU leadership “in team” with the Minister of Health, Jens Span, who will run for vice president.

An equally discreet support, but to Friedrich Mertz, the statement from the leader of the Markus Center of Bavarian Christian Socialists (CSU) was interpreted, that “everyone who believes that after the coronavirus things will be as before” laughs. Something similar said a few days ago Mr. Mertz.

According to the BILD newspaper, Friedrich Mertz, a former leader of the CDU parliamentary group that lost the party battle to Angela Merkel in 2002 and had a successful career in multinational giants, has the support of the president of the Bundestag, the Bundestag and his mentor, among others. CDU youth leader Tilman Kuban, former EU commissioner Guido Ettinger and former KO leader Wolfgang Bosbach. Outgoing Leader Annegret Krab-Karenbauer, Chancellor Helge Brown, 16-year-old Head of the European Parliament and a close associate of Chancellor Elmar Brock, Hessian Prime Minister Volker Buffier and the leader of the CDU Women’s Organization, Annette Widmann-Mauts. Chancellor Johan Vandepul, Bremen MPs Elizabeth Motsman and Kay Whitaker, as well as former President Ellis Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

The new leader of the CDU will be called to lead his party in the elections to be held in five states in 2021 and of course in the federal elections on September 26. However, it is not certain that he is the candidate of the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) to the Chancellery. So far, in addition to the party’s presidential candidates, at least Bavarian Prime Minister Marcus Center and Health Minister Jens Span are considered to have their sights set on the Chancellery. Both enjoy high public acceptance rates. The selection of a candidate for chancellor is expected to take place in the spring.
