With the votes of the Christian Democrats (CDU), the Bavarian Christian Socialists (CSU), the Social Democrats (SPD), the Liberals (FDP) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the German parliament rejected the resolutions that the Greens and the one related to the German occupation in Greece, according to Deutsche Welle. After a debate attended by 15 speakers and lasting almost an hour and a half, the majority of the parliament reaffirmed the official line of the postwar German governments.

In other words, it is not about reparations and compensation for Greece and that the whole matter has been definitively resolved, both legally and politically. With the exception of the nationalist AfD party, all parties agreed that German crimes should be kept alive or remembered during the occupation and that Greek-German initiatives should be developed in this direction. The debate was attended by the new ambassador of Greece, Mara Marinaki, from the galleries of parliament.

Resolutions

In their resolution, the Greens asked the German parliament to recognize, first, that the issue of reparations and reparations remains open and that Greece has never given up on its claims, and second, that the German government’s position that the whole problem is and thirdly, the parliament to demand from the government a new approach to the issue of the occupation loan. Although he did not explicitly refer to the Greens’ request, the ultimate goal of this proposal was the repayment, to one degree or another, of the loan to Greece. The Greens, however, did not raise the issue of compensation and reparations. Such a proposal would be unrealistic, parliamentary officials told Deutsche Welle. The purpose of his initiative was to initiate a dialogue between the two countries. The way German governments have dealt with Greek demands in recent decades has been “abrupt and humiliating,” Manuel Saratsin, the Greens’ keynote speaker, told parliament. This was contributed by the fact that after the war “Greece needed the favor of the country of the perpetrators.” He stressed that relations between Greece and Germany should be “on an equal footing”. The Greens proposed the establishment of development programs for martyred peoples, support for the victims of the occupation and their families, as well as the continuation of joint initiatives to preserve the memory of the German occupation.

The Left Party also demanded recognition of the Greek demands in its resolution. And not only. Parliament should demand that the German government legally recognize official Greek claims for reparation and compensation. He also asked the German government to start negotiations with Athens with a view to concluding a contract regulating the scope and terms of reparations and compensation. In his speech, the left-wing MP and chairman of the Greek-German Parliamentary Friendship Committee, Gregor Gizi, stressed that Germany must make great efforts to fulfill the responsibilities it has assumed since the Occupation. Recalling that the discussion takes place on the day of the celebration of the Greek Revolution in 1821, he stressed that, in addition to compensation, Greece also needs political support. At a time when Ankara claims areas in the Aegean, the German government continues to allow the export of components for six warships to Turkey. “With these exports of military equipment to Turkey, Germany is contributing to the military threat from Greece. “This is the last thing we can justify, given our own historical past.”
