Public opinion is shocked by yesterday’s attack in Trier, Germany, where a 51-year-old German dragged and killed five people with his car.
The victims, as it became known later, include a 45-year-old Greek man with his daughter, a nine-week-old baby.
His wife and other son, just 17 months old, are being treated at the hospital.
So far, the German police have not officially announced the identities of the five dead, while the perpetrator is said to have been under the influence of alcohol.
“The 51-year-old man who crashed his car into the crowd has not left a letter explaining his action,” said Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Roger Levens.
According to the authorities’ investigation so far, there is no evidence of the perpetrator’s political or religious motives. Furthermore, there is no evidence that he acted with the help of accomplices.
Under the influence of alcohol
The tragic event took place yesterday afternoon on a sidewalk in the historic center of Trier.
The driver, a 51-year-old German living in the city, was, as the first tests showed, under the influence of alcohol. According to a police spokesman, he drove the Range Rover SUV toward pedestrians at a speed of 70 to 80 km / h, which he did not stop. 
It even zigzagged for four minutes, chasing them for a kilometer to Porta Nigra, the main Roman monument in the city.
Crowds gathered at the scene of the attack until last night to honor the victims.
According to Wolfram Laibe, the overwhelmed mayor of Trier, most likely is not an attack with political, terrorist or religious motives.
He was sleeping in his car
However, it is unknown whether the perpetrator, who was immediately arrested, can give an explanation as he shows signs of mental disorder. 
In the last few days he had left his house and slept in the car, which he had borrowed.
During a press conference, prosecutor Peter Fritzen said the 51-year-old had consumed a large amount of alcohol and that he would be asked to be placed in a psychiatric facility to determine whether he could be held accountable.
In addition to the expat and his two-month-old daughter, three women, ages 25, 52 and 73, tragically died.
