German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced today tougher new measures against the spread of the coronavirus.

Under the new closure, stores, schools and daycare centers will remain closed until Christmas to stop the increase in cases. The new rules go into effect Wednesday.

At a press conference following a meeting of federal and state leaders, he said the country urgently needs to address the exponential rise in COVID-19 infections.

New restrictions will apply until January 10 At least, to help tackle the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which threatens to overwhelm the country’s healthcare system.

The decision will cause quite a stir for retailers, the education system and the public before the Christmas holidays.

The new restrictions

The new measures stipulate that:

– All unnecessary shops and services will be closed until January 10, including beauty salons that remain open.

– Schools are invited to send students home and continue their lessons online. At the same time, the Christmas holidays are extended until January 10.

– Closed centers and nurseries. Parents will be able to enjoy paid leave to care for their children.

– Employers are encouraged to allow employees to work from home.
– It is forbidden to consume alcohol in public places
– Religious events in churches, synagogues and mosques can take place if they follow hygiene rules, but common chants of the faithful are prohibited.

– At the same time, the federal states also plan to reduce restrictions on contacts from December 24 to 26, so that close relatives can spend Christmas together. The rules allow gatherings of up to five people and children under fifteen from the immediate family, that is, up to two households.

– People cannot buy fireworks for New Years Eve.

The chancellor also advised families planning to reunite over the holidays to isolate themselves a week in advance to be safe.
