One of Europe’s largest brothels, the infamous Pascha, in East German Cologne, has filed for bankruptcy, according to a local newspaper.
“We are at the end,” Armin Lobside, director of the brothel, told the Express newspaper.
Lobside told the Express that the brothel spent all of its money during the pandemic ban.
The Pascha operates in an 11-story building and has a staff of 60 people, including masseurs and cooks. Under normal circumstances, 120 prostitutes work alone, the newspaper reports.
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is located, banned prostitution five months ago in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Lobside criticized state authorities for not being clear when the bans would be lifted.
“It just came to our notice then.” We could probably avoid bankruptcy with the help of the banks if we had the assurance that activities would start early next year, “he told the newspaper.
Extradition organizations warn that closing brothels is likely to lead to illegal prostitution, exposing women to greater risks of exploitation.
