According to experts, the phenomenon is called red tide, and it is the rapid accumulation of phytoplankton in salt, fresh and mixed waters, which results in its coloration.

Red tides are a phenomenon of rapid accumulation of phytoplankton, salt, fresh and mixed water in the water column, which results in staining of surface waters. It usually occurs in coastal areas.

The microorganisms whose exacerbation causes red tides are single-celled eukaryotic organisms, which have the ability to control their buoyancy and form dense, visible spots near the water’s surface. Some types of binoculars contain photosynthetic dyes that vary in color from green to brown and red.

When these phytoplankton organisms show high concentrations, they cause water coloration that varies from purple to almost pink. Not all phytoplankton blooms are dense and intense to cause water coloration, and not all water-related dyes associated with phytoplankton bloom are reddish in color.

Furthermore, red tides are not directly related to the movement of tidal water, and therefore scientists prefer to use the term phytoplankton bloom against the term red tide.

Some red tides are related to the production of biotoxins, the depletion of dissolved oxygen in the water, while other harmful effects and, in general, such outbreaks in the phytoplankton bloom are described as harmful phytoplankton blooms). The most obvious effects of this type of red tides are related to the mortality of fish fauna, marine and coastal fauna, avian, aquatic mammals and other organisms.
