THE French police proceeded to arrest of a man allegedly its author armed attack in greek orthodox church in Lyon which resulted in the serious injury of a 50 year old priest of Greek origin.
So far the incentives of the perpetrator who shot the priest twice remain unknown.
The suspect was arrested in a Lyon restaurant. The mayor of the city, Gregorio DuquesaIn comments on television, he claimed that it is not yet clear why the perpetrator shot the priest. A source close to local prosecutors in Lyon said the prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the assassination attempt.
The priest is being treated in critical condition, while an anonymous French police source told Reuters that the 50-year-old priest who received two shots, received first aid on the spot.
According to the information, the attack took place in Greek-speaking Orthodox Church of the Annunciation from Lyon, when the priest closed the church, at 4:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Greek time).
The case is being closely monitored, but so far the French Diocese of the Orthodox Church has not been officially designated.
Charles Michel: “We condemn the horrible act”
The President of the European Council condemned the attack in Lyon.
“We condemn this horrible new act in Lyon,” he said. Charles Michel adding that “all our thoughts are with the priest who is between life and death.”
“In Europe, freedom of conscience is a fact for everyone and must be respected, violence is unacceptable and reprehensible in a democracy,” said Charles Michel.
