Fines of 700,000 euros in receipts for harassment of borrowers

In 2019 and 2020, € 700,000 fines were imposed on collection companies for their outrageous behavior towards borrowers.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Development, in 2019, 185 complaints from consumers were presented to the General Secretariat of Commerce and Consumer Protection of the Ministry of Development and Investments for illegal harassment by debtor information companies and financial institutions for their past due debts. infractions to the provisions of law 3758/2009.

Respectively, for the year 2020, 274 complaints were filed and 19 administrative sanctions were imposed for a total of 231,000 euros.

Specifically, the fines in these companies mainly referred to:
• notification to debtors before maturity of ten days from the day on which their debt became due,
• harassment of debtors with calls to the work phone,
• harassment of debtors despite the existence of debt settlement observed,
• deviation from the lender’s orders,
• confusing information,
• Demonstrate offensive behavior during telephone communication.
