Chinese authorities have announced that they could be described as the start of a second coronation wave, with a city in the northeast province of Jilin described as “high risk”.
Provincial authorities raised the alert to the highest level in the city of Sulan in just three days. Nine new confirmed cases of the virus were recorded yesterday, while control measures were increased in the city, such as restricting traffic, prohibiting unnecessary movements and closing comments.
The total number in mainland China has risen to 14, the highest since April 28. Among them is the first new case in Wuhan in a month.
While Beijing described the country as “low risk”, the 14 new cases represent a significant increase, and in addition to Jilin, one case was reported in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province.
The 70-year-old patient has been quarantined at the hospital since April 9 and has been diagnosed seven times negative, but was diagnosed positive on May 9.
Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, also confirmed a new case today, a 23-year-old man who traveled to the city on May 9 from Jilin.
The asymptomatic
Equally worrying for the Chinese authorities is the unknown number of asymptomatic patients.
The new case in Wuhan was asymptomatic, according to Hubei Prefecture. The 89-year-old man has not left his home since late January. His wife was also diagnosed without symptoms.
After confirming the new case, the doctors conducted a test in the area where the elderly couple lived and recorded five other cases of asymptomatic patients.
The level of risk in the area has already increased from low to moderate.
According to Chinese authorities, on Saturday, the number of confirmed asymptomatic cases rose to 20, the highest performance since May 1.
