Famous actor George Seagal passed away at the age of 87

Hollywood actor George Seagal, nominated for a 1967 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, died in California on Tuesday at the age of 87, according to Deadline.

George Seagal died of “complications after heart bypass surgery,” Sonia’s wife said in a statement obtained by the magazine.

Born on February 17, 1934 in a small town in New York, he made his big screen debut in the 1960s, starring in The Longest Day (1962), an epic war movie about landing in Normandy.

He would become famous a few years later, for his role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, alongside giant figures of the seventh art such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

He starred in films by legendary directors, such as Stanley Kramer (Ship of Fools, 1965) or Sidney Lumet (Bye Bye Braverman, 1968).

On posters for some fifty films as of 2010, he received, in addition to Oscar nominations, the Golden Globe for a 1974 comedy, Melvin Frank’s A Touch of Class.

In recent years, he has mainly taken roles in television series.
