The Turks opened the Varosia waterfront
The occupation authorities in Cyprus opened a crossing point to the waterfront in the besieged city of Varosia on Thursday morning.
During the opening of the waterfront, citizens and press officers were allowed to enter under the watchful eye of the “police forces” of the regime and the occupation army. It will be allowed to cross the area until 5:00 p.m.
In a message on Twitter, the occupying Prime Minister Ersin Tatar affirms that “we are restoring the closed Varosi for humanity, Cyprus and the world. We all walk together from the open Varosi towards a new future”, paraphrasing one of his pre-election slogans which is #for the new future.
It is unknown if Ersin Tatar himself will eventually visit the area.

Turkey’s decision to extend the entry permit to the Varosia waterfront was condemned from Thessaloniki on Wednesday by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“This decision is a flagrant violation of the UN Security Council Resolutions and Greece will support all relevant efforts of the Republic of Cyprus,” said Mr. Mitsotakis during his speech from the Rotunda historical monument.
At the same time, Cypriot government spokesman Kyriakos Kousios stressed on Wednesday that Nicosia “will do everything possible to prevent undesirable developments”, noting that the Republic of Cyprus has already lodged an appeal with the Security Council.
The decision to open the coast of Varosia was announced on Tuesday by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ersin Tatar in Ankara, five days before the illegal elections in the occupied territories.
This is a decision that is clearly part of Erdogan’s attempt to pressure his chosen one, Ersin Tatar, to stand in the by-elections.
This action by the Turks at this time is a very negative development given the efforts that are being made both to reduce tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and to resume talks on the Cyprus issue. With this action, Turkey will essentially cancel the move in the right direction that it made with the withdrawal of the Yavuz floating drilling rig from block 6 of the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
